What: Neighbourhood Night
When: Thursday, August 27, 2015 from 6:00 to 8:00pm
Where: Cottonwood Park, Coquitlam
The skinny: You’re invited to Neighbourhood Night, a free community block party at Cottonwood Park. Bring your family, meet your neighbours and enjoy a beautiful evening the park with family friendly games, kids’ activities and refreshments. This event is weather dependent.

What: Gallery Opening Reception
When: Thursday, August 27, 2015 from 6:00 to 8:00pm
Where: Port Moody Arts Centre
The skinny: Attend the opening of Messengers and Journeying with the Totems and Inheritance. The artists will be in attendance. Admission is free and refreshments will be served.

What: Paul Anka
When: Friday, August 28 at 8:00pm
Where: Hard Rock Casino, Coquitlam
The skinny: Born and raised in Ottawa, Anka recorded his first single, “I Confess” at the age of fourteen. Two years later, he recorded what would be his best known song of all time, “Diana”. Released in 1957, it sold over ten million copies and launched his career as an international teen idol. He soon established himself as a successful artist and songwriter penning his Top 10 hits, “You Are My Destiny”, “Lonely Boy”, “Put Your Head On My Shoulder”, “Puppy Love”, “My Home Town”, “Summer’s Gone” and “Dance On Little Girl”.

What: Opera Tales at the Lake
When: Friday, August 28 to Sunday, August 30, 2015
Where: Evergreen Cultural Centre, Coquitlam
The skinny: Evergreen has a new partner for the annual Opera Weekend: VANCOUVER OPERA! Opera Tales at the Lake is a brand new production focusing on arias and ensemble pieces from operas based on traditional tales such as Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Hansel and Gretel and others. This exciting and varied program features the professional singers of the VO Young Artists Program accompanied by Kimberley-Ann Bartczak.

What: Try Girls Ice Hockey
When: Saturday, August 29, 2015 from 10:00 to 11:30am
Where: Poirier Sport & Leisure Complex, Coquitlam
The skinny: Is your daughter wanting to try hockey but you’re not sure where to start? Girls ages 5+ years are welcome to come attend and try hockey in a free, fun one hour ice session. Everything will be supplied: skates, equipment, and coaches. There will also be prizes and refreshments. All current Tri Cities Predators are welcome to attend and bring a friend to try hockey. Register online in advance. The Tri Cities Predators, formed in 1998, is the only all-female minor hockey association in the Tri Cities; it offers competitive and recreational hockey opportunities. Note: Please arrive early for equipment fitting or bring your own.

What: Free Coquitlam Express Exhibition Game

Where: Port Coquitlam Recreation Complex
The skinny: Bring your friends and family to watch a free BCHL exhibition hockey game! Help kid off another great ice season at the Port Coquitlam Recreation Complex, as the Coquitlam Express goes head-to-head with the Langley Rivermen in the exciting exhibition game. Admission by donation to the food bank.

What: Peter Frampton
When: Saturday, August 29 at 8:00pm
Where: Hard Rock Casino, Coquitlam
The skinny: Frampton remains one of the most celebrated artists and guitarists in rock history. He released four albums before his iconic double-live album, Frampton Comes Alive! was released in 1976. The album spent a total of seventeen weeks at the top of the US charts and became the biggest-selling live rock album up until that time. It also spawned a trio of hits with “Show Me the Way”, “Baby, I Love Your Way” and “Do You Feel Like We Do”.

What: The Art of Craft Beer
When: Sunday, August 30, 2015 at 4:00pm
Where: Yellow Dog Brewing Company, Port Moody
The skinny: Develop a good head for beer! Participants receive a private group tour of the site and Certified Cicerone, Kate McKinney, who will share her knowledge of ingredients, fermentation, packaging and beer styles. Each tour is limited to 30 people per session. In addition to a tour of the Brewery, attendees receive a Yellow Dog tasting glass, a light snack and a tasting of the finest brews at Yellow Dog in the relaxed atmosphere of their picnic area. What: Steve Earle and the Dukes
When: Sunday, August 30 at 8:00pm
Where: Hard Rock Casino, Coquitlam
The skinny: Three-time Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Steve Earle and his band The Dukes are touring North America. A protégé of legendary songwriters Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark, Earle quickly became a master storyteller in his own right with his songs being recorded by such artists as Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, Waylon Jennings and The Pretenders. His debut album, Guitar Town was released in 1986 and featured the title song along with “Goodbye’s All We Got Left”. The album quickly shot to #1 on Billboard’s Country Albums chart and immediately established the term, “New Country”.

What: Art of Storyboarding for Teens
When: Wednesday, September 2, 2015 from 1:30 to 3:30pm
Where: Coquitlam Public Library, City Centre Branch
The skinny: Teens interested in movies and TV can join artist Jamie McCarthy.She will show you the finer points of creating a storyboard: a sequence of images that tells a story. Materials are supplied, and you will be able to take home your storyboard at the end of the session. The session is free, but registration is required.
