What: Blue Mountain Pop-Up Beach
When: On now until August 21, 2015
Where: Blue Mountain Park, Coquitlam
The skinny: Come and visit a sandy beach in the middle of Coquitlam at Blue Mountain Park – south side off of King Albert Street. Bury your toes in the sand and build a sand castle. The sandy beach features beach chairs, umbrellas, flags and unlimited sand for family fun. Grab your beach toys! There will be special activities every week.

What: Linden Tree Tour
When: Thursday, July 16, 2015 at 7:30pm
Where: Henry Esson Young (HEY) Building, Riverview Hospital, Coquitlam
The skinny: Walks and tours are free and open to the public and run rain or shine. They are led by members of the Riverview Horticulture Centre Society and last about two hours, depending on weather and walkers’ preference. Dress for the weather, and wear comfy shoes or boots. Children are always welcome. Dogs must be on ‘leash’.

What: Culture Club
When: Friday, July 17, 2015 at 8:00pm
Where: Hard Rock Casino, Coquitlam
The skinny: With all of the original members – Boy George, Mikey Craig, Roy Hay and Jon Moss – back in the fold, Grammy Award-winning band Culture Club is kicking off their highly-anticipated reunion tour right here in the Tri-Cities marking the first time in fifteen years that the group has played together in North America. Formed in 1981 in London, Culture Club catapulted to international fame after the release of their #1 single, “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me” the following year. They went on to achieve nine Top 10 singles in the US and Canada selling over 50 million albums worldwide. Although the group eventually went their separate ways in 1986, Boy George has continued to remain a global icon. In addition to the comeback tour, he and the band have recorded a new studio album, Tribes, which is set for release later this year. The album will feature their lead single, “More Than Silence”.

The skinny: Metro Vancouver Regional Parks celebrates Canada’s Parks Day! Tour the 7-acre organic community garden. Learn how to grow great fruits and veggies and plant for wildlife. The gardens are a wonderful way to enjoy nature, see organic growing techniques in action and get ideas for home gardening. Tours begin at 9:00 and 9:15am. “Hot” composting demonstration from 10:00 to 10:30am. Hosted by the Colony Farm Community Gardens Society. Registration not required.

What: Celebrating Wetlands

Where: Minnekhada Regional Park, Coquitlam
The skinny: Metro Vancouver Regional Parks celebrates Canada’s Parks Day! Celebrate the wonder of wetlands. Beavers, ducks and Sandhill Cranes use the marsh as a nursery, and so do dragonflies, salamander and frogs. Park interpreters will be on-hand to help you discover all the life you can find in just a little bucket of pond water. Hosted by Metro Vancouver. Registration not required. Park at Quarry Road Entrance and meet at the Lower Marsh at Lodge Trail.

What: Celebrating the Seashore

Where: Belcarra Regional Park, Belcarra
The skinny: Metro Vancouver Regional Parks celebrates Canada’s Parks Day! Join them for an ocean-themed celebration. Revel in the incredible diversity of marine life found at Belcarra Regional Park. Head down to the dock to hold a crab and learn about crab fishing or join scuba diver and educator Doug Swanston on the beach for an up-close look at the incredible creatures found just below the waves. Enjoy a puppet show, take in displays from local community groups, and create a traditional Japanese style Gyotaku painting. Hosted by Metro Vancouver and Belcarra Beachkeepers. What: Ultimate Car Show

Where: Hard Rock Casino, Coquitlam
The skinny: There is free admission to this all ages event. You can also enjoy an outdoor BBQ and beer garden from 1:00-8:00pm. If you would like to display your vehicle, pre-register to avoid line-ups on the day of and get advanced entry to park your car. All proceeds go to SHARE Family and Community Services.

What: Stories Under the Stars
When: Saturday, July 18, 2015 from 7:30 to 9:30pm
Where: Colony Farm Regional Park, Coquitlam
The skinny: Metro Vancouver Regional Parks celebrates Canada’s Parks Day! From April to October, a colony of bats reside in the bunkhouse attic, an important historic site in the park. Come and hear children’s stories about bats and other wildlife who live in the park. At dusk, watch and count the bats emerging from the bunkhouse. This is a great opportunity for children to learn about bats and perhaps see them for the first time! Bring a lawn chair. Wear long sleeves to protect you from mosquitoes. Please no insecticides as this can be very harmful to the bats. For ages 5 to 10 with accompanying adult. Hosted by the Colony Farm Park Association. Registration required.

What: The Comic Strippers: Hot Summer Night

Where: Evergreen Cultural Centre, Coquitlam
The skinny: They’re bringing the HEAT, which can only mean one thing: SWEAT! A fictitious male stripper troupe, played by a cast of some of Canada’s best improvisational comedians, performs a scared shirtless improv comedy show. They sing, they “dance”. These guys are oiled up and ready to make you laugh at them. A show for all genders. 19+ only. No extreme nudity, just extreme hilarity!

What: Count’s 77 and STRIP
When: Saturday, July 18, 2015 at 8:00pm
Where: Hard Rock Casino, Coquitlam
The skinny: Hailing from Las Vegas, Count’s 77 is led by Danny “Count” Koker, who was singing long before he found international fame as the owner of Count’s Kustoms, his hot rod and chopper shop. Koker can also be seen starring on the hit television series, Counting Cars which is currently enjoying its fourth season on History. Lead guitarist, Stoney Curtis has also amassed an international following as a recording and touring blues artist releasing his critically acclaimed live double-album, Stoney Curtis Band in 2012. Guitarist John Zito, bassist Barry Barnes, drummer Paul DiSibio and keyboard Tommy Paris round out the band’s line-up. STRIP, an original Canadian based rock ‘n’ roll band, is opening for Count’s 77. STRIP has already broken some barriers in the Vancouver music scene by performing many shows in well known venues in the downtown core such as The Roxy, The Railway Club, Fan Club, and Joe’s Apartment. STRIP also came in 2nd place in the Rock The Mic competition and signed a contract with Vancouver Hard Rock Casino.

The skinny: How many litres of milk does a cow produce each day? What do cows eat? These questions and many more will be answered at the Mobile Dairy Classroom Experience. Watch and learn as knowledgeable staff demonstrate how to milk a dairy cow and how to feed a new calf.

What: Little League 2015 Canadian Senior Championships
When: Wednesday, July 22 to Wednesday, July 29, 2015 from 9:00am to 9:00pm
Where: Blue Mountain Park, Coquitlam
The skinny: Play Ball! Coquitlam Little League is proud to be hosting the 2015 Senior League Canadian Championships. This is the 5th national championship Coquitlam has hosted in their 60 year history. There will be 7 teams of 15 and 16 year olds from across Canada, including Coquitlam’s Little League Senior A’s, who will compete for the right to represent Canada at the Senior League World Series in Bangor, Maine. A year of preparation has gone into making this a week of baseball that will create a lifetime of memories for everyone involved. Bring the whole family! The younger children can play in the waterpark or at the playground nearby.
