See Hansel and Gretel the Musical in Coquitlam Parks

Place Des Arts Teen Theatre Troupe Coquitlam

If you enjoy theatre in the great outdoors, we have good news for you. Thanks to a generous grant from the Coquitlam Maillardville Heritage Trust, Place des Arts 2015 Summer Teen Theatre Troupe will perform a modern take on an old fairy tale in local parks during the last week of July.

Six talented teens, five of whom are Coquitlam residents, will sing and act their way through a musical adaptation of Hansel and Gretel led by professional director James MacDonald. The troupe will perform eight shows which are free and open to the public. And the final performance? It’s a special show for the children at Ronald McDonald House – hard to feel bad about missing that.

Director James MacDonald says, “I love immersive, roving, outdoor theatre and re-imagined classic fairy tales with a twist (Shrek is one of my favourites). This is the premiere production of Hansel and Gretel the Musical which features and parodies several modern pop songs. I believe theatre should be fun, playful and inspiring, and I hope that it is as fulfilling to our audiences as it is to us.”

Hansel and Gretel of course, is a much-loved fairytale. The two children Hansel and Gretel are given up and left in the forest by their struggling family. This version is slightly different, though, as they encounter an empty gingerbread House with a portal that transports them to another world. It is there that a sorceress mistakenly seeks vengeance on them for the disappearance of her sister, the Gingerbread Witch. A princess allies with the siblings and assists in their safe return to their remorseful family.

Round up the kids and take in a show. Here is when they are happening:
