What: Gallery Opening Reception
When: Thursday, May 21, 2015 from 6:00 to 8:00pm
Where: Port Moody Arts Centre
The skinny: Free and open to the public. Featuring the work of George Vlismas, A Retrospective in Mixed Media. Sculptor and painter George Vlismas was born and raised in South Wales. He spent time in Africa during WWII, and moved to Port Moody in 1967. His art has been strongly influenced by the people and places where he has lived, as well as by his careers as an Engineer and an art educator. George prefers to carve in hardwoods where he can exploit both the colours and grains of the wood but he also works in stone and has some pieces cast in bronze. Additionally George paints in acrylics and oils. His paintings are usually abstracts, and are occasionally humorous.

What: Giggles for Grady
When: Friday, May 22, 2015 at 7:00pm
Where: Inlet Theatre, Port Moody
The skinny: Grady William Killam is a sweet three year old boy who sadly lost his battle with cancer on March 2, 2014. Grady loved to laugh and always made those around him smile everyday. He was here for just a few short years, but brought so much happiness to everyone. This night of laughter in Grady’s honour features Jane Stanton as lead comic. Jane has been called “a fiery ball of hilarious energy” and watching her perform has been likened to “having a late night conversation with your best friend” if your best friend is the funniest person you know and likes mayonnaise. All proceeds from this event will go to the Michael Cuccione Foundation.

What: Terry Fox Ravens Football Team Fundraiser
When: Friday, May 22, 2015 at 7:00pm
Where: Terry Fox Theatre, Port Coquitlam
The skinny: Get ready to “Shake Your Tail Feathers”, here comes the Blues Brothers Too Showband. They’ll keep you spellbound as they sing, dance, and joke their way into your hearts. They’re “On A Mission From God” to entertain you with high energy, choreographed, song & dance routines. The Blues Brothers Too are a Blues Brothers tribute act. Joining them as an opening act, is one of Canada’s hottest bands DOUBLE OVERTIME with amazing vocals by Shannon Renning. Jake & Elwood Too bring a variety of exciting music to the stage. You’ll hear rhythm and blues, soul, country, and a whole lot of great rock and roll dance tunes performed live.

What: Crossroads Coffeehouse: Reno
When: Friday, May 22, 2015 at 7:30pm
Where: The Gathering Place, Leigh Square, Port Coquitlam
The skinny: The open mic starts at 7:30, and then featured performer, Reno, takes the stage at 9:00pm. Reno is an emerging composer of guitar, with interests in Jazz, Classical, Surf, Blues, as well as other Instro genres. Playing since a young child, Reno commonly plays solo acts across the Greater Vancouver Area and the GTA.

What: Vitaly: An Evening of Wonders

Where: Evergreen Cultural Centre, Coquitlam
The skinny: Vitaly Beckman isn’t your average illusionist – his illusions defy belief. His usual repertoire includes such tricks as making drawings come to life, levitating objects, and making people appear and disappear from photographs. An Evening of Wonders is a show of jaw-dropping, mind-bending magic that never fails to leave the audience shaking their heads in wonder.

What: Opening Reception: Christie Lim and Shamina Senaratne
When: Saturday, May 23, 2015 from 2:00 to 5:00pm
Where: Evergreen Cultural Centre, Coquitlam
The skinny: Experience the opening of HERE AND THROUGH AND BACK AND THROUGH, an exhibition of new works in fibre from Port Moody artist Shamina Senaratne and Burnaby artist, Christie Lim. While each artist’s voice and body of work is distinct, Senaratne and Lim both work with layers of meaning and material. The transparency and translucency of the fabric they each frequently work with immediately reveals how each work has been made and how looking and seeing through words and images changes meanings. And, through a unique installation, each artist’s work will also be seen through the work of the other. The opening is free and open to the public.

What: The Unmentionables Fashion Show

Where: Terry Fox Theatre, Port Coquitlam
The skinny: PoCo Heritage is proud to present Unmentionables, a unique and exciting evening of fashion featuring noted fashion historian Ivan Sayers. Ivan is a mesmerizing speaker and his anecdotes explain how historical events influenced clothing fashions. He enjoys sharing his wealth of knowledge with his audience as much as they enjoy listening to him. If you have never attended one of Ivan’s fashion shows you are in for a rare treat. Doors open at 6:00pm so ticket holders can browse the displays, buy a ticket for the balloon pop or take their chances on a 50/50 draw.

What: Art After Dark! A Night of the Arts for Teens

The skinny: Place des Arts’ Youth Arts Council invites teens ages 13 to 17 to a free night of the arts! What: Elvis ’68 Comeback Special

The skinny: In 1968, after 7 years of making movies, Elvis Presley was presented with the challenge of coming back. Having been lost in the British Invasion and psychedelic movement, Elvis’ career had grown stale, the world had changed. He had to find his way home, and stepping on the stage in black leather biker outfit, he sang his heart out, performing like a panther and singing the songs that made him the King of Rock ‘n Roll and taking back his career. Now award winning Elvis Tribute Artist, Eli Williams, and the all-star band the Memphis Sound will recreate the entire special, start to finish, in a multimedia extravaganza not to be missed. What: Music for Young Children (MYC) Open House

The skinny: Parents interested in learning about the popular Music for Young Children® program are invited to an MYC® open house at Place des Arts. Enthusiastic teacher Cindy Sletmoen will be available to answer questions about this unique Canadian music program designed to foster and nurture musicality among youngsters. MYC® instruction through dynamic, hands-on teaching techniques is provided to students ages 3½ – 9 in four levels. The curriculum covers keyboard skills, singing, ear training, rhythm, theory, sight-reading and composing. What: Drawing from Life in the AGE
When: Wednesday, May 27, 2015 from 6:00 to 9:00pm
Where: Evergreen Cultural Centre, Coquitlam
The skinny: On the last Wednesday of each month, the Art Gallery at Evergreen is transformed into a drawing studio. Each exhibition provides artists of all skill levels with a unique environment and atmosphere for drawing from a model. Drawing from Life sessions alternate between male and female models who pose undraped .Drawing boards supplied. Please provide your own drawing supplies. Space is limited to twelve participants per session. No advance registration required but it is encouraged to ensure your place.
