What: Salon Speaker Series: Mike Dangeli

Where: Place des Arts, Coquitlam
The skinny: Mike Dangeli is a renowned carver and artist of the Nisga’a, Tlingit, Tsetsaut and Tsimshian Nations whose work is collected and exhibited throughout North America and Europe. His works include masks, drums, regalia, paintings and limited edition silk-screened prints, as well as 20 totem poles and a 30-foot ocean going canoe. Mike will discuss the traditions and techniques of his art form and give a carving demonstration.

What: Success in the Canadian Workplace

Where: Port Moody Public Library
The skinny: Find out what Canadian employers expect in the workplace. Topics include workplace etiquette and culture, basic skills, and the qualities of an effective employee. Reserve a spot. This program is in partnership with Training Innovations, Port Moody.

What: Secrets of a Soccer Mom
When: Thursday, April 23 – Sunday, April 26 and Wednesday, April 29 – Saturday, May 2, 2015
Where: Evergreen Cultural Centre, Coquitlam
The skinny: Presented by Stage 43. Three engaging women reluctantly take the field in a “mothers versus sons” soccer game. They intend to let the children win, but as the game unfolds it’s the women who become intent on scoring. The competition ignites a fierce desire to recapture their youthful good humor, independence and sexiness, paving the way toward a better understanding of themselves, their families, and changes they need to make in their lives. A show that puts the heart and “sole” into comedy.

What: Philosopher’s Cafe

The skinny: A series of informal public discussions with SFU’s Philosopher’s Café. Discuss thorny questions and big ideas. What: Crossroads Hospice Coffeehouse

Where: The Gathering Place, Leigh Square, Port Coquitlam
The skinny: The open mic starts at 7:30, and then featured performer, Shades of Green, takes the stage at 9:00pm. What: Port Coquitlam City-Wide Garage Sale

Where: Various Locations, Port Coquitlam
The skinny: The City of Port Coquitlam’s City-wide garage sale gives residents a chance to declutter, make some cash and find a new home for reusable items. Held following Earth Week, the annual event is part of the City’s ongoing waste-reduction efforts. Participants dispose of their unwanted items in an earth-friendly way, while benefiting from the additional bargain hunters drawn out by the large number of garage sales. Last year, over 140 households signed up.

What: Hyde Creek Watershed Society Open House and Salmon Release

What: Teen Poetry Slam
When: Wednesday, April 29, 2015
Where: Coquitlam Public Library, City Centre Branch
The skinny: To celebrate National Poetry Month, the library is holding its annual Teen Poetry Slam on Wednesday, Apr. 29 at the City Centre Branch. The slam invites poets in grades 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 to perform a single, original poem, no more than three minutes in length, for a chance to win prizes. The event is free. Anyone may watch, but to compete, teens must register.

What: Harbour Management Town Hall Meeting
When: Wednesday, April 29, 2015 from 7:00 to 9:00pm
Where: Inlet Theatre, Port Moody
The skinny: In November 2013 the City of Port Moody and Port Metro Vancouver held an open house to discuss a proposed strategy to provide fair, equitable and safe access to the inlet. Feedback from the public was collected at that open house and through an online survey. The city is now holding a Town Hall Meeting to present the results and hear what you think of the options they’re proposing.
