What: Gallery Opening Reception

Where: Port Moody Arts Centre
The skinny: The Nature of Silk by Samantha Williams Chapelsky runs in the Canadian Pacific Gallery and Suncor Gallery from April 16 – May 14, 2015. For this exhibition, Chapelsky has designed more than 40 pieces of hand painted silk artworks, including tapestries and painted clothing. Each of the pieces has been created on Habutia Silk, which is traditionally woven in Japan.

What: Pro-D Day Movie Matinee

What: Ballet Kelowna Spring Tour

Where: Evergreen Cultural Centre, Coquitlam
The skinny: Now a keystone in Evergreen’s seasonal dance programming, Ballet Kelowna graces the stage with a mixed repertoire of classic and contemporary dance under newly appointed Artistic Director and CEO Simone Orlando. Expect a mixed programme featuring three premieres by some of Canada’s leading contemporary ballet choreographers, coupled with the introduction of Lee Dances – a presentation of excerpts from award-winning works created for the esteemed Clifford E. Lee Choreography Award. Former Royal Winnipeg Ballet dancer and award-winning choreographer Shawn Hounsell and Simone Orland, will each create new work, highlighting the electrifying artistry and physicality of the ballet’s masterly dancers.

What: Eric Burdon and The Animals
When: Saturday, April 18, 2015 at 8:00pm
Where: Hard Rock Casino, Coquitlam
The skinny: Hailed by Rolling Stone as one of the “100 Greatest Voices of All Time”, the founder and lead vocalist for the Animals took the music world by storm in 1962 when he and the group released an electrified version of the traditional folk number “The House of the Rising Sun”. They soon followed with such classics as “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood”, “We Gotta Get Out of This Place”, “It’s My Life”, “I’m Crying”, “Inside Looking Out”, “The Story of Bo Diddley”, “Bring It On Home to Me” and “See See Rider”. Today, Burdon and the band still enjoy performing to sold-out venues worldwide. The current Animals line-up consists of Billy Watts (guitar), Red Young (keyboards), Terry Wilson (bass), Tony Braunagel (drums) and Wally Ingram (percussions).

What: Blue Dot Day of Action

The skinny: The event promises family-friendly fun that encourages everyone – presenters, entertainers, participants and audience members to engage one another in a respectful and positive sharing of information and ideas that ensure our right to live in a healthy environment. There will be guest speakers from local government and David Suzuki Blue Dot, exhibitors displaying innovative products, organic food and beverages, entertainers and displays.

What: Earth Sunday Tree Tour
When: Sunday, April 19, 2015 at 1:00pm
Where: Henry Esson Young (HEY) Building, Riverview Hospital, Coquitlam
The skinny: Walks and tours are free and open to the public and run rain or shine. They are led by members of the Riverview Horticulture Centre Society and last about two hours, depending on weather and walkers’ preference. Dress for the weather, and wear comfy shoes or boots. Children are always welcome. Dogs must be on ‘leash’.

What: Family Day at PdA! Featuring Place des Arts Music Ensembles
When: Sunday, April 19, 2015 at 1:30pm
Where: Place des Arts, Coquitlam
The skinny: Gather up the family and tour the current exhibitions; then participate in several all-ages workshops based on the artworks you’ve seen! Contribute to Artist in Residence Joy Kirkwood’s Tag, You’re It! banner project; use watercolours to paint close-up details of BC rivers like Amy Thompson; make your own pan pipes with Sarah Kinsman. What: Patient Rights: The First Step in Advance Care Planning

What: Not Just a ‘Beer + Burger’ Fundraiser

The skinny: The Coquitlam Foundation is holding its spring fundraiser. Attendees will be able to have their choice of a variety of delicious food items – not just burgers – plus the always-popular beer or wine selection. Those menu items include your choice of a Feenie Burger and Fries, Butternut Squash Ravioli, Salmon, or Hunter Chicken. The skinny: Learn about how the watershed plan was developed and what the future holds for implementation of key priority strategies in 2015 and beyond at the free Watershed Community Roundtable Open House. It’s happening from 4:00-8:30pm inside Coquitlam City Hall. Outside, in the courtyard, enjoy free yoga classes, centered around mindfulness of being in a watershed even in an urban setting. Kids Yoga (parent participation required) runs from 4:00-4:30pm and Community Yoga runs from 5:30-6:30pm.

What: Drawing from Life in the Age
When: Wednesday, April 22, 2015 from 6:00 to 9:00pm
Where: Evergreen Cultural Centre, Coquitlam
The skinny: On the last Wednesday of each month, the Art Gallery at Evergreen is transformed into a drawing studio. Each exhibition provides artists of all skill levels with a unique environment and atmosphere for drawing from a model. Drawing from Life sessions alternate between male and female models who pose undraped.Drawing boards supplied. Please provide your own drawing supplies. Space is limited to twelve participants per session. No advance registration required but it is encouraged to ensure your place.
