Hike for Hospice 2015

Hike for Hospice 2015

Lace up your walking shoes, because the Hike for Hospice is happening this weekend! Hikers, ramblers, and wanderers are all welcome to join the Crossroads Hospice Society for the 13th annual walk. The national pledge-based family event takes place on the first Sunday of May, raises funds to support people living with a terminal illness and their loved ones.

The main event is a five kilometer family and pet friendly walk. When you participate in Hike for Hospice you will be joining thousands of others across Canada, hiking in support of hospice palliative care or in memory of a loved one. It’s all happening at Hyde Creek Recreation Center in Port Coquitlam from 9:00am to 12:00pm on Sunday, May 3, 2015. The purpose of the hike is not only to raise much needed funds, but to raise awareness of the many challenges faced by hospice palliative care and to promote the wonderful work that all volunteers and professionals in the field perform daily.

You may wonder exactly what hospice care is. Hospice palliative care provides physical, psychological, social, spiritual and practical support to people living with life-threatening illness, their loved ones and the bereaved. Your fundraising dollars will go towards providing physical and emotional care to the terminally ill and ongoing bereavement support after the death of a loved one.

Only 16% to 30% of Canadians who die currently have access to or receive hospice palliative and end-of-life care services depending on where they live in Canada. Even fewer receive grief and bereavement services. Each death in Canada affects the immediate well-being of an average of five other people, or more than 1.25 million Canadians each year. Hospice palliative care programs allow patients to gain more control over their lives, manage pain and symptoms more effectively, and provides support to family caregivers. That’s why this event is so important.
