What’s Happening in the Tri-Cities: Celebrate Spring and Nowruz

What: TED2015 Livestream
When: Monday, March 16 to Friday, March 20, 2015
Where: Inlet Theatre, Port Moody
The skinny: The Port Moody Public Library has organized a free live webstream of all mainstage program sessions at the TED2015 conference at Inlet Theatre. They are able to provide these viewings free to our members and community thanks to the generosity of the TED organizers who believe that “inspiration happens in a group, rarely alone in front of a computer.” Seating is first come, first served, so arrive early.

What: Spring Break Movie Madness
When: Wednesday, March 18 to Friday, March 20, 2015
Where: Port Moody Public Library
The skinny: Bring your whole family and come watch some great kids’ movies this spring break! Movies run from 11:00am-1:00pm, and space is limited. This week’s offerings include Up, Tinkerbell and the Legend of the Neverbeast and Jumanji.

What: Origami for Beginners
When: Thursday, March 19, 2015, 10:00-10:30am or 10:45-11:15am or 11:30am-12:00pm
Where: Coquitlam Public Library, Poirier Branch
The skinny: Discover some easy paper folding designs with one of the world’s few professional origami artists, Joseph Wu. For children aged seven and up. Paper provided. Space is limited. This event is free but registration is required.

What: Jazz Night: Tropical Fish
When: Thursday, March 19, 2015 at 8:00pm
Where: Gallery Bistro, Port Moody
The skinny: Enjoy an evening of fusion jazz featuring Tropical Fish, made up of Chad Galpin (Bass); Bradan DiCicco (Guitar), Jesse Mark (Drums) and Trevor Whitridge (Trumpet). Their music is influenced by Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and John Scofield. The Gallery Bistro concession will be open serving tasty light refreshments.

What: Lynyrd Skynyrd

Where: Hard Rock Casino, Coquitlam
The skinny: Known for their southern hard rock sound during the 70s, Lynyrd Skynyrd has released over 60 albums with sales well beyond the 30 million mark. Their string of hits include “Gimme Three Steps”, “Free Bird”, “Don’t Ask Me No Questions”, “Saturday Night Special”, “What’s Your Name”, “That Smell”, “You Got That Right” and their beloved classic rock anthem, “Sweet Home Alabama”.

What: Celebrate Spring Event

Where: Port Moody Station Museum
The skinny: Celebrate spring by taking a walk through the museum’s beautiful heritage and meditation gardens. There will be games and crafts for the kids.

What: World Day for Inner Peace
When: Saturday, March 21, 2015 from 2:00 to 4:00pm
Where: Centennial Pavilion, Coquitlam
The skinny: The goal of this international initiative is to spread the message of peace through supporting families and young minds to find joy, emotional and mental wellness, and spiritual fulfillment from a simple meditation technique. Join in on free meditation workshops tailored for different age groups, from young children to youth and adults to seniors. Children will also enjoy art activities, while our youth meditation practitioners will conclude the event with a live cultural music performance. Tea and refreshments will be served.

What: Nowruz Festival
When: Sunday, March 22, 2015 from 1:00 to 7:00pm
Where: Glen Park, Coquitlam
The skinny: This free family festival celebrates celebrate the first day of spring and the beginning of the Iranian New Year. Enjoy entertainment, music and traditions include the Haft Sin or Seven “S” table setting.

What: Riverview Tree Tour
When: Sunday, March 22, 2015 at 1:00pm
Where: Henry Esson Young (HEY) Building, Riverview Hospital, Coquitlam
The skinny: Walks and tours are free and open to the public and run rain or shine. They are led by members of the Riverview Horticulture Centre Society and last about two hours, depending on weather and walkers’ preference. Dress for the weather, and wear comfy shoes or boots. Children are always welcome. Dogs must be on ‘leash’.

What: Amy Schumer
When: Sunday, March 22, 2015 at 7:30pm
Where: Hard Rock Casino, Coquitlam
The skinny: With her blend of wholesome, girl-next-door looks and edgy comedy, Schumer has become one of the hottest names in comedy today. She made her television debut in 2007 on NBC’s hit competition series, Last Comic Standing. After guest appearances on such sitcoms as ABC’s Cupid and NBC’s 30 Rock, she was invited in 2011 to skewer Charlie Sheen on The Comedy Central Roast of Charlie Sheen. That same year, she released her stand-up album, Cutting which reached the Top 5 on the Billboard Charts.

What: Musical Mornings: Nicholas Wright
When: Wednesday, March 25, 2015 at 10:00am
Where: Evergreen Cultural Centre, Coquitlam
The skinny: A native of England, Nicholas Wright has performed as a soloist, chamber, and orchestral musician in most of the major concert halls of Europe, Asia, and North America. Trained as a scholar at the Royal College of Music in London, he is currently head of the violin department at the Vancouver Academy of Music.
