Family Day is here again, and festivities abound in the Tri-Cities! There are lots of terrific events throughout the weekend, including a cool Retro Technology “Petting Zoo” and Working on the Railroad Day at the Station Museum. For the adults, attend a Leigh Square Sunday Coffee Concert and the 6th annual Roman Danylo Improv Games!

What: Place des Arts Salon Speaker Series with Animator Jeff Chiba Stearns

The skinny:
Jeff founded Meditating Bunny Studio Inc., a Vancouver-based Webby award-winning and Emmy® nominated studio in 2001. Operating under the DIY slogan Keeping animation old school, he has built up a client roster that includes 3M International, Post-it® Notes and Sharpie. As an independent filmmaker, Jeff’s short films have screened at over 200 film festivals around the world and garnered over 33 awards. Jeff will talk about how he has built a successful and creative career juggling both commercial and independent projects.

What: Port Moody Library’s Retro Technology “Petting Zoo”

The skinny:
Explore gadgets from the past at the Port Moody Public Library’s Retro Tech Petting Zoo. Check out a hands-on display of vintage electronics and devices, and watch your kids navigate the ancient mysteries of rotary phones, cassette players, Polaroid cameras, and more. Bring down your old school vinyl and give it a spin on a classic turntable, or get in touch the old-fashioned way, and type up a letter on a typewriter. If you’re up for it, sit down for some original NES games, and show off your mad Paperboy and Super Mario skills. When you’ve finished wallowing in the past, head back to the future with some interactive examples modern and cutting edge technology. Dance up a storm with some new console games, or check out the newest wearable tech. With 3D printer demos, a new tablet showcase and a hands-on electronics station, there are activities for everyone at this all-ages event.

What: Port Moody Arts Centre Family Day Open House

This Family Day festivity will be an interactive, hands on, artistic and best of all, fun event for all members of the family! A chance for prospective students to meet with the Arts Centre instructors and guest artists, and to experience what the Centre has to offer. Participate in hands-on activities and art projects, visit the current gallery exhibition, and take a sneak peek inside the arts, music and ceramics studios.  Enter for a chance to win one of three family memberships.

What: The Roman Improv Games

The skinny:
The Roman Improv Games is the sixth annual Roman Danylo show at Evergreen. If you have ever wanted to be part of a studio audience for a comedy show taping, now is your chance to experience the lights, camera, and action of the real thing! Roman Danylo, star of CTV’s Comedy Inc. and the producers of Convos With My 2 Year Old (44 million + hits on YouTube) have teamed up to present and film a new comedy web series and TV pilot that pits improvisors against each other in a battle fit for improvisational gladiators. Featuring Roman Danylo, David Milchard, Ken Lawson, Denise Jones and Chris Casillan.

What: Leigh Square Coffee Concert – VOC Sweet Soul Gospel Choir

Back by popular demand, the Coffee Concerts showcase an exciting line up of professional musicians from across Metro Vancouver at Terry Fox Theatre! On February 8, see why VOC Sweet Soul Gospel Choir has “changed lives” with its energetic, soulful performances. Founded by music director, Checo Tohomaso, this dynamic choir mixes together the sounds of Soul, Gospel, R&B, Jazz, Hawaiian, Calypso, and Reggae. So infectious the audience can’t resist joining in by toe tapping, foot stomping, jumping, singing, dancing and hand clapping!

What: Working on the Railroad Family Day Event  at The Museum

The skinny:
Come and have fun during the Port Moody Station Museum’s Family Day event! There will be hot chocolate, entertainment, scavenger hunts, a silent film on the Venosta, a 1921 Rail car, crafts and story time! Have some fun putting your name on a rail plate, then hammering it onto the train track where it will stay on the track all year!

What: City of Coquitlam Family Fun Day
When: Monday, February 9 from 10:00am to 1:00pm
Where: Glen Pine Pavilion [map]
The skinny:
Participate in a variety of activities from arts & crafts, sports activities, face painting to entertainment. Everyone is welcome, however activities will be geared towards children 3 – 7 years. Light refreshments available. The City of Coquitlam is also hosting Family Swim Days at both the City Centre Aquatic Complex and the Poirier Sport & Leisure Complex, from 10:00am to 3:00pm at both venues.
