Local Groups Benefit from Spirit of Coquitlam Grants

Coquitlam Spirit Community Grants 2014

The City of Coquitlam has awarded over $260,000 to recipients of the fall 2014 Spirit of Coquitlam grants, which support local non-profits and community-based organizations. 26 will receive funding to build community spirit through public art, sport activities and programs, festivals and events, sports hosting and capital projects.

Selected projects range from $200 to over $30,000 and include, for example, festivals such as the Charshabe Souri (Fire Festival) and Nowruz (New Year) celebrations organized by the Tri-City Iranian Cultural Society, sporting events such as the 2015 Senior Little Leage Championships to be hosted by Coquitlam Little League, and support for playground accessibility and safety improvements for the Step by Step Development Society.

Successful projects must have outcomes that align with the city’s strategic goals. A multi-departmental staff team reviews grant requests to ensure this alignment. Staff recommendations are then forwarded to Council for discussion and approval.

Coquitlam continues to highlight support for community events, celebrations and sport hosting proposals as part of the Celebrate Coquitlam strategy, which was developed in 2011 to create a vision, structure and action plan for the definition, positioning, coordination and delivery of community and city events in Coquitlam.

As the city looks forward to Coquitlam’s 125th Anniversary and 55+ BC Games in 2016, an even greater emphasis will be placed on initiatives in 2015 and 2016 that support these celebrations, as both present opportunities under the Spirit Grant program to align and harness community capacity to support these events. Additionally, $10,000 will be allocated from the Community Capital Fund to support block parties and smaller neighbourhood-initiated activities in 2015. More information on this program will be advertised in 2015.

Funding for the Spirit of Coquitlam Grant Program is derived from the Casino Host Agreement revenue. If you have a great idea for an event or art project, keep your eyes peeled. The next Spirit of Coquitlam Grant intake will occur in March 2015. More information about the Spirit of Coquitlam Grant can be found at www.coquitlam.ca/spiritgrant.
