2014 Port Moody Winter Solstice Lantern Festival

Solstice Lantern Festival 2011 Port Moody

The fourth annual Winter Solstice Lantern Festival is coming back to Port Moody, in an all-new location, on Sunday, December 21, 2014. To take in the fun head to Pioneer Memorial Park, located between Newport Village and City Hall, between 3:00 and 6:00pm.

The location isn’t the only thing that’s new. There’s also an expanded group of performers, including John Bowman, Sean Marthinsen, Aly Young and We Are Lazuli. Plus, special activities including body glow painting, a labyrinth walk and a community drum circle. Bring your family with their lanterns, costumes and drums to celebrate the longest night of the year.

If you don’t already have a lantern (I have to confess that I don’t, myself), don’t fret. There will be a small lantern-making station set up at the festival from 3:00 to 4:00pm for those who haven’t prepared lanterns in advance. Lantern making is sponsored by the generous folks at the Port Moody Arts Centre.

The changes this year are very exciting for the organizers, and are thanks to the support of the City of Port Moody. In previous years they had to pay out of pocket for many expenses, including insurance. They’ll also have volunteer firefighters there to help get some fire barrels started. Not only will they light up the night, they’ll keep everyone warm.
