It’s getting Christmassy in the Tri Cities, with the opening of the neighbourhood’s only artist-run co-op gift shop for the season. It’s a good week to get your bride on, tackle some life drawing and take in a lot of Shakespeare.

What: Blackberry Artist’s Society: Christmas Marketplace Opening Reception
When:  Thursday, November 20 from 6:00 – 8:00pm (extended gift shop hours to December 20th)

The skinny:   The annual Blackberry Artist’s Society Christmas Marketplace opens for your gifting pleasure on Thursday, November 20th with an opening reception, 6 – 8pm in the Port Moody Arts Centre, 2425 St. Johns Street. This year, the ringing of a specially commissioned handmade ceramic bell marks the start of our extended hours in the run up to Christmas. Presented as the Tri Cities’ only artist-run co-op gift shop, the Blackberry Artist’s Society offers unique locally made fine arts and crafts solutions for all your gift-buying needs. Work includes visual arts, jewelry, ceramics, textile arts, woodworking and gift cards among other media, is local, original and more often than not, one-of-a-kind.  Meet Your Makers: The society’s artists will be on hand at the opening reception, as well as staffing the shop seven days a week until Christmas. Members are also running demo events from November 22 to December 20 on Saturday afternoons, 12:30-2:30pm, for crafting close encounters open to the public. Christmas Marketplace open daily until December 22nd, with extended hours, from 10am to 6pm Monday to Friday, till 5pm on Saturdays and from 12 noon to 4pm on Sundays. Admission: Free

What: When That I Was …
When:

The skinny:   It’s 1650, and the Puritans have closed the theatres. Old Jack Rice was once a famous actor and now is down on his luck. As a boy, he performed in Shakespeare’s troupe, and he’s snuck back into the deserted theatre for some shelter. He himself is nothing more than a dusty, abandoned old scrap of humanity – but his memory can take us to Queen Elizabeth’s palace, to the opening night of King Lear, and everywhere in between.    In When That I Was …, Christopher Hunt performs over 25 characters, moving seamlessly between Rice, Will Shakespeare, Queen Elizabeth, and many others. What: PechaKucha Night Port Coquitlam

The skinny:   Get ready to be inspired by local talent and creative minded community members in a fun, fast paced speaker series event with an unusual twist! The PKN format is 20 slides x 20 Seconds each. This means our presenters have just under 7 minutes to present their unique ideas & creations complimented by 20 images. PechaKucha (prounounced Pechuk-cha) means “Chit Chat” in Japanese. What:  Family Day at PdA: Lantern Making & All Things Small

The skinny:  Gather up the family and tour three exhibitions, meet the artists and participate in several all-ages workshops! Admission is by donation. Art Activities: Create an origami taxidermy inspired by Julie Dives exhibition; Make a miniature clothespin easel for mini art and tiny dolls using clothespins and yarn; Build your very own lantern in preparation for our free annual multicultural celebration of light, A Lantern Affair on December 6. What: Drawing from Life in the Art Gallery: Erin McSavaney

 Wednesday, November 26 from 6:00 – 9:00pm
Where:   Evergreen Cultural Centre, 1205 Pinetree Way (map)
The skinny:   On the last Wednesday of each month, the Art Gallery at Evergreen is transformed into a drawing studio. Each exhibition provides artists of all skill levels with a unique environment and atmosphere for drawing from a model. Drawing from Life sessions alternate between male and female models who pose undraped.    The November 26, 2014 session will take place against the backdrop of Erin McSavaney’s Some Intersections.    Drawing boards supplied. Please provide your own drawing supplies.    Secondary school art students (ages 16 and older) are encouraged to participate in these sessions to develop their portfolios.    Cost for One Workshop: $15 | Four Workshops: $40 | ECC Members: FREE | Ages 16+
