Remembrance Day 2014 in the Tri-Cities

With Halloween behind us, poppies are popping up on lapels and we’re all turning our thoughts to Remembrance Day. For 2014 you can pay your respects at services in Belcarra, Port Moody, Coquitlam, and Port Coquitlam. Join fellow citizens and veterans in the Tri-Cities to remember the sacrifices that were made, and continue to be made, for our country.

Belcarra Remembrance Day Services

Port Moody Power and Sail Squadron’s annual Remembrance Day ceremonies will be happening on the pier at Belcarra Park once again, with attendees arriving by car and boat. Pre-ceremony setup and music starts at 9:30am, and the formal ceremony starts at 10:35am on November 11 with the sounding of an air raid siren. Ceremonies typically conclude at approximately 11:15am. Lunch follows at the park shelter on a donation basis, with a suggested donation of $5.00 per person.

Coquitlam Remembrance Day Services

This year Coquitlam is holding a special event in the lead-up to Remembrance Day. Community members are encouraged to visit Blue Mountain Park from Tuesday, November 4 to Monday, November 10, 2014 where they can paint poppies on the grass as part of a temporary public art dispay. You can also write a message of remembrance on yellow ribbons to be tied on trees in Blue Mountain Park. These ribbons will be kept up until November 18, 2014, and then will be transcribed and forwarded to a Canadian Veterans Group. (Note: these events are weather dependent.) The traditional Remembrance Day ceremonies are taking place at 10:00am on November 11, 2014 at Como Lake Middle School, followed by a parade to the Cenotaph on Porter Street at 10:30am. Participate in the Act of Remembrance and the laying of the wreaths at 11:00am before joining the veterans at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 263. Children are welcome to accompany the veterans to the Legion Hall.
