A Lantern Affair 2014

A Lantern Affair Place Des Arts

We mentioned A Lantern Affair earlier this week, but this annual free holiday event presented by Carré Heritage Square bears repeating. A Lantern Affair Celebration of Light is taking place on Saturday, December 6, 2014 from 5:00 to 7:30pm at 1120 Brunette Avenue, Coquitlam.

The festivities are once again hosted by Place des Arts, Mackin House Museum and Gare de Fraser Mills Station Museum, and include art and heritage activities, a festive market and, of course, lots of great entertainment. Art activities include lantern making, wooden clothes peg bi-plane ornaments and hand-crafted greeting cards, while heritage activities include cookie decorating, caroling and storytelling with none other than the jolly old elf himself, Father Christmas.

Guests will be entertained throughout the event with live music, song and theatre, including a live Radio Play: Christmas in Maillardville presented by Place des Arts’ Theatre Company with special guest professional actor Renée Bucciarelli. This charming segment will take the audience back in time to how Christmas was celebrated right here in our city at the turn of the century.

Filling the centre with dulcet tones, Place des Arts’ Musical Theatre Company will perform during a lovely lantern ceremony, ushering in the light with lively and heartfelt musical numbers. Adding to the musical entertainment are Place des Arts’ talented Wind Ensemble, String Quartet and Junior Strings Trio.

For a bit more fun, Place des Arts’ active Youth Arts Council is reprising its successful winter carnival. Old-time games, crafts, face painting and a scavenger hunt through Place des Arts are all part of the plan. Guests are encouraged to bring a donation to the Share Foodbank for entry into the carnival.

The event also provides a great opportunity to get a little holiday shopping done in a lively festive atmosphere. Place des Arts’ Christmas Boutique is brimming with delightful hand-crafted gifts and ornaments made by talented local artisans, while the atrium hosts the Positively Petite miniature exhibition, the Place des Arts Pottery Department annual sale of student works and a holiday bake sale.

You can take the time to remember those in need during this festive season as well. Place des Arts will have food and toy bank hampers in the Atrium during the evening, and up until December 13, 2014. A donation of food or a new, unwrapped toy for the Share food and toy bank is most welcomed.

Finally, thanks to Tim Hortons, free coffee, hot chocolate and donuts will be on offer.

You know you want to go. To make things easier on the organizers – and ensure there’s enough hot chocolate for everyone – register online at Brown Paper Tickets. It’s free, and the people throwing this fabulous, festive shindig will thank you.
