Family Fun at Place des Arts

Place Des Arts Family Fun 2014

Here at The V3H headquarters (i.e. – our house), we’re really excited about Place des Arts’ annual Impromptu event this weekend. This is an annual date night that my husband and I don’t miss. If you’re wondering what’s cooking at the Coquitlam arts centre for the younger members of your family, however, we have a couple of suggestions.

Day of the Arts

Registration is now open for Place des Arts’ next Day of the Arts, which takes place on Friday, October 24, 2014 from 8:45am to 3:45pm. During the BC-wide Pro-D Day kids from Kindergarten to grade five can take part in “Halloween Howler,” a day-long art camp filled with a variety of Halloween-themed visual and performing arts activities. Campers can create a Skeleton Person; mold a Creepy Clay Crawler; sing during a Haunted Howl-A-Long or do a Monster Mash dance! These and more spooktacular activities will get kids set for Halloween and in the mood for haunting.

The Halloween Howler Day of the Arts consists of 6 blocks of activities divided into three age groups: Kindergarten; Kindergarten to Grade two; and Grades three to five. Families can pick the block of classes that best suits the interests of their child. To see more information including a full timetable, head to Registration may be done by phone at 604.664.1636, online at or in person at Place des Arts.

Family Day and Mr. I’s Slightly Spooky Songs & Stories

Place des Arts’ next Family Day at PdA is on Sunday, October 26, 22014 from 1:30 to 3:30pm. All are welcome to gather up the family and tour Karen Santos’ mixed-media exhibition Silence Lifted and Elaine Hunter’s photo-manipulations in My Chimerical World. Participants will have an opportunity to meet the artists and then participate in several all-ages art activities based on the artworks in the exhibitions. Guests are invited to stay on for Mr. I’s Slightly Spooky Songs & Stories concert starting at 3:00pm (additional ticket required).

Family Day art activities include symmetrical abstract landscapes, Sharpie tie-die coasters and handmade glitter balls using old CDs. Admission to Family Day is by donation, but reservations are recommended. Make yours online at Brown Paper Tickets or by calling 604.664.1636.

Mr. I’s Slightly Spooky Songs & Stories is an annual favourite. Local music teacher, children’s entertainer and Place des Arts’ faculty member Yurgen Ilaender, affectionately known as “Mr. I,” will lead Hallowe’en fun for young children ages two and up from 3:00 pm – 3:50 pm. This annual Hallowe’en concert never fails to enchant youngsters and their parents. Costumes are welcome and audience participation is encouraged. Everyone will go home ready for a haunting Halloween! Tickets for the show are $7 each. Get yours by calling 604.664.1636, dropping by Place des Arts in person or online at
