What’s Happening in the Tri Cities: Exhibitions and a Challenge

This week brings a couple of exhibition openings, the Coquitlam Crunch Challenge and the first morning schmooze after summer.

What: Tri Cities Chanber of Commerce Morning Schmooze
When:  Thursday, September 4 from 7:15 – 9:00am
Where:  The Poco Inn & Suites Hotel, 1545 Lougheed Highway, Port Coquitlam (map)
The skinny:  Join us bright and early for our September Morning Schmooze! Meet other Chamber members, make new contacts and expand your business network all while enjoying your morning breakfast at one of the Chamber’s most popular networking events. Bring along at least sixty business cards. This event is hosted in a “speed-networking” style, where you sit with 6 other people and each person is given an opportunity to deliver their one minute elevator pitch to the others at the table. After 10 minutes a bell rings and you switch tables and start the process again.Registration required ($20 for members; $40 for non-members).

What:  Place des Arts Teachers Show Reception
When:  Thursday, September 4 from 7:00 – 9:00pm

The skinny:  Fine art, inspiration and a glass of wine . . . . Drop by the opening reception for By Land, Air and Sea, acrylic on canvas works by Jeff Wilson, Silence Lifted, multiple media by Karen Santos and Art Feats, Place des Arts’ annual Teacher and Staff Exhibition. Artists will be in attendance to answer your questions about her process and inspiration. By Land, Air and Sea will be on display in the Atrium Gallery from September 4 to October 4, 2014. Art Feats will be on display in the Mezzanine Gallery from September 4 to October 4, 2014. Silence Lifted will be on display in the Leonore Peyton Salon from September 4 to November 8, 2014. What: Coquitlam Crunch Challenge

The skinny: Walk up and down the Coquitlam Crunch to raise money for the Coquitlam Foundation Diversity Fund. Three different skill levels and fun for the whole family.

What: Opening Reception: Requiem for a Glacier (Paul Walde)
 Saturday, September 6 from 2:00 – 5:00pm
Where:  Evergreen Cultural Centre, 1205 Pinetree Way (map)
The skinny:  Join us for the opening reception of Requiem for a Glacier, an expansive video installation by Paul Walde, featuring a four-movement oratorio performed by an orchestra and chorus atop the Farnham Glacier in the Jumbo Glacier area of eastern British Columbia.    The collection of five glaciers that make up the ancient features of Jumbo, or “Qat’muk”, in the Purcell Mountain Range are left over from the last ice age. Now, they are under immediate threat from climate change and resort development.    Over thirty-seven minutes, Requiem for a Glacier features panoramic glacier views along with the sounds and images of the oratorio, as performed by the Requiem Volunteer Orchestra and Chorus (conducted by Ajtony Csaba of the University of Victoria Symphony).    FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

What: PoCo Heritage Exhibition
 Monday, September 8 from 10:00am

The skinny:  If all goes as planned PoCo Heritage hopes to have their new feature exhibit available to the public starting on this day. It will honour 100 years since the start of World War One and will pay tribute to early Port Coquitlam residents who were deployed overseas.
