Frozen Yogurt and all the Sprinklings: Menchies, Suter Brook Village

Menchies Frozen Yogurt in Suter Brook

Not so long ago, and in good time for sunnier weather (although it’s also a great haven from the torrential rain), Menchies Frozen Yogurt opened in Port Moody’s Suter Brook Village. As the website advertises, Menchies frozen treats are made using Canadian milk from happy cows and, having visited on numerous occasions, happy milk translates into one happy kid.

In case you haven’t visited yet (and if not, why not?), Menchies is a serve yourself sundae palace where you can mix flavours and toppings for your own unique dessert. The café is easy to find – it’s in the main piazza of Suter Brook Village opposite Sango’s and next door to Cobs and Thrifty Foods. There is plenty of seating inside, although during summer weather you’ll be tempted to sit outdoors at one of the benches to watch the world go by.

It’s all do-it-yourself, but don’t panic. Here’s a helpful guide.

Turn to your right once you enter the shop. Grab a paper bowl or a waffle bowl then move to the left. Here you’ll find the frozen yogurt dispensers. Labels above each machine tell you what flavour they dispense. Hold your bowl under the nozzle and pull down on the lever. It can be a little tricky so keep an eye out for helping junior family members and be aware that the flow won’t start immediately. Persevere. Eventually the frozen yogurt snakes out into your bowl.

One tip, and something I only just noticed … each machine dispenses two flavours of frozen yogurt. The lever in the middle will give you a mix of each … yes, obvious isn’t it? It’s taken me ten trips to work that one out.

Flavours change fairly regularly, keeping favourites such as tart, vanilla and chocolate in constant rotation among watermelon, cotton candy and oreo. Keep moving left and choose your flavour assortment, as wild or refined as you want.

Once you’ve finished with the frozen stuff, take a look at the toppings. This is where you can truly personalise your sundae. Chocolate? Try choc rocks, dark chips, M&Ms, Reese’s pieces, white choc chips and more. Candy – how about a sour gummy worm, a jelly dolphin or a tree frog? Crunchy fans can choose from assorted nuts, Nerds and butterscotch chips. Don’t forget the shredded coconut, oreo cookie pieces or the yogurt-covered pretzels.

Continuing to your left (yes, there’s more) and you can find fruit chunks and my personal faves, the mini mochi – tiny glutinous rice cakes that taste better than they sound. Mmm.

And then (nearly there) are the sauces – caramel, chocolate, peanut butter …

Finally – a word of warning. Bowls are priced by weight. Take your creation to the till where you can find out how much it costs before you slurp. Hint: stock up on a My Smileage rewards card and save money on your treats.

Then sit, scoop and enjoy.

Aaah summer. Bon appetit!

  1. Hey Amanda, great article. I hope they are subsidizing your frozen yogurt creations in turn for super advertising!!! Enjoy!

  2. Thanks Angela! Maybe we’ll see you over a frozen yogurt there sometime this summer – it’s one of our fave places to cool off in the area, and we’re frequent visitors (Yes, we have a smileage card!) 🙂
Alas – journalistic integrity means I don’t get compensated though 🙁
