What’s Happening in the Tri Cities: Astronomy, Films, Horses and Speakers

What:  Starlab
When:  Thursday, July 10 from 10:00am – 4:00pm
Where:  Inlet Theatre, Port Moody Civic Centre, 100 Newport Drive (map)
The skinny:   Kids 6-12 can learn about astronomy with the HR MacMillan traveling Starlab visiting Port Moody library. Children under 10 years old must be supervised by a parent/adult. Thirty minute sessions will be held hourly at 10am 11am 12pm 2pm 3pm and 4pm. This program is on a first-come basis. Tickets will be issued at the door starting at 9:45am for all timeslots. Also camp out with us on the lawn 10:00am to 2:00pm and enjoy some handpicked books, special storytimes and peronalized reading advice. We supply the books and the iced tea, you bring the relaxation! All ages are welcome. Drop in, no registration required.

What:  Premiere Event

The skinny:   An evening of fun, entertainment and world-class speakers!  Doors open and registration at 6:30pm. Evening includes:

What: Key to Life: Film Night
When:  Friday, July 11 at 7:30pm

The skinny:  Port Moody Film Society presents Key to Life: A case of stolen identity and one determined bride-to-be intersect in this comedic escapade from famed Japanese filmmaker Kenji Uchida. Comedy | Japan | Not Rated | 128 minutes | Language: Japanese with English subtitles. Tickets are available after 6.45pm on the night ($5 membership; $5 per film).

What: Cinema Under The Stars: Monsters University

Where: Sun Valley Park, Hamilton Street, Port Coquitlam (map)
The skinny: For an unforgettable Friday night experience, start your weekend off with an outdoor movie night this summer!  Leigh Square will showcase recent movies on our 26ft tall enormous silver screen at Sun Valley and Gates parks, so pack a picnic, bring a blanket and round up some friends or bring the whole family out to Cinema Under the Stars! What: Creatures of the Not-So-Deep
When:Saturday, July 12 from 10:30am – 2:30pm
Where: Belcarra Bay Beach
The skinny: Head to Belcarra Regional Park where your children can catch, observe and release beach creatures you collect in a seine net. Allow an hour or more and expect to get muddy.From Port Moody follow Ioco Road to the Belcarra Bay Beach picnic area and look for tents.

What: 2014 Canada Standardbred Horse Day and Standardbred Horse Fan Club’s 10th anniversary celebrations

The skinny: The Standardbred Horse Fan Club will be celebrating the 2014 Canada Standardbred Horse Day (also the Year Of The Horse!) and the Club’s tenth anniversary in Port Coquitlam, BC, Canada with educational and FUN events which showcase the incredible versatility of the Standardbred Horse and all of the wonderful qualities that the breed has become associated with for all time. Kids in the Summer Reading Club can drop in for a free showing of the Lego Movie on Wednesday, July 16 from 2-4pm in Port Moody’s Inlet Theatre. Children under 10 must be supervised by a parent. Suitable for ages 5+ Sign up for the Summer Reading Club anytime at the Port Moody Library.
