Coquitlam Foundation Awards Night 2014

Moving into top gear for summer this week in the Tri Cities. Everyone loves a parade? Then this is the week to enjoy it with Festival Coquitlam’s display. Another park event is pilates – less parade, more mats.

What: Port Coquitlam Farmers Market

The skinny:  It’s back! Summer is officially here! PoCo Farmer’s Market is back for a sixth season, with local produce, artisan goods, entertainment and a whole lot more each Thursday afternoon until September. Farmer’s Markets are a great way to shop sustainably and support your local community – PoCo market is no exception.

What: Artist Opening Reception: Mystique
When:  Thursday, June 5 from 7:00 – 9:00pm

The skinny:  Celebrate a gallery opening in the presence of exhibiting artists, Ken McRae and Therese Lydia-Joseph. The exhibition comprises photography and paintings exploring the mystery and intrigues in nature’s creativity. There are refreshments and a live three-piece band to help you along.

What:  Port Moody Library Book Sale Blowout
When:  Friday, June 6 from 5:00 – 8:00pm, and Saturday, June 7 from 9:00am – 3:00pm
Where:  Port Moody Public Library, Port Moody Civic Centre, 100 Newport Drive (map)
The skinny:   Stock up on reading matter for the holidays; if it’s wet, you’ll have something to stop you going stir crazy; if it’s sunny then your beach lounging is assured. This is cash only so come armed with $1 for hardcover and DVDs, or 50c for soft cover and CDs. A steal. All funds going to support the library. Pssst! On Saturday after noon, a bagfull of whatever’s left over will go for $5 – BYOB bring your own bag!

What: Shred-a-thon

The skinny:  Support Rotary Club charities and avoid identity theft. Sponsored by the City of Port Moody, Best Shredding, The Tri City News, and The NOW, get rid of your sensitive documents and personal pages without that teen diary falling into the wrong hands. What: Plant Propagation Workshop
When:  Saturday, June 7 from 2:00 – 3:30pm

What: Pacific Wind Ensemble: Pathways
 Saturday, June 7 from 8:00 – 10:00pm

The skinny:  Take a musical journey in the company of one of Vancouver’s finest purveyors of auditory delights. Pacific Wind Ensemble will lead the audience through Fred Stride’s Seaquam: Journey to the Sky, Alfred Reed’s exploration of the Lotus Sutra and a brand new work by conductor David Branter. What: Festival Coquitlam Grand Parade and Teddy Bear Picnic
When:  Sunday, June 8 – parade starts 9:45am; picnic from 11:00am – 4:00pm
Where:  Town Centre Park, 1301 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam (map)
The skinny:  Guess what? Today is the day that the teddy bears have their picnic. And you can watch them getting there too before joining the party with your own bear or two. Join in the parade, watching as it winds its way to Town Centre Park. Then treat your bear to storytelling, puppet shows, gymnastics and more in the park. Admission to the picnic is $3, unless you are three or under … or a bear. Oh my.

What: Pilates in the Park
When:  Wednesday, June 11 from 7:00 – 8:00pm
Where:   Rocky Point Park, 2800 Murray Street (map)
The skinny:   OK. Let’s all hold our collective breaths, hoping that this free exercise under the sunset event doesn’t get cancelled with bad weather. Bring a mat and your flexibility to join other like-minded exercise buffs for an all-level Pilates workout near the inlet. Pre-registration required (course #51519). Rain rain – go away L
