Coquitlam Teddy Bear Picnic – Summer Starts Here

Teddy Bear Picnic Coquitlam

There’s no better reminder for Tri-Cities residents that summer is almost here than the annual Festival Coquitlam Teddy Bear Parade and Picnic. Held each year at the beginning of June, this outdoor extravaganza pulls together the best summer happenings in the city and bundles them into a day of outdoor fun around Lafarge Lake. The fun starts with a parade and continues with a real life teddy bear picnic in Town Centre Park, rain or shine. This year’s event takes place on Sunday, June 8th, 2014, with a family-friendly concert featuring Charlotte Diamond kicking the festivities off the day before, on Saturday June 7th, 2014.

So dress your bear up in its best party gear and catch the first rays of summer in your city.

Popular children’s entertainer Charlotte Diamond will be singing a selection of new songs as well as delighting her fans, old and young, with the standard favourites such as “Four hugs a day” and “I am a pizza”. Accompanied by her son, Matt on guitar, Charlotte will certainly get you and your bears into picnic mode for the next day’s party. Slippery Fish anyone?

Coquitlam Grand (Teddy Bear) Parade

When: Sunday, June 8th, 2014 from 9:45 to 11:00am
Where: The parade marches from Burlington Drive via Pacific Street, Guildford, and Town Centre Boulevard to Pinetree Way and then into Town Centre Park for the picnic (map)
Tickets: no charge for watching the parade

Everyone loves a parade! And the Teddy Bear parade is no exception. Colourful floats process past onlookers as the parade works its way through Coquitlam en route for the picnic in the park. The participants march westwards from Burlington Drive to Pacific Street, then head north to Guildford, east onwards to Town Centre Boulevard. Here the parade heads along Town Centre Boulevard to Pinetree Way before turning north and heading to the Teddy Bear Picnic at Town Centre Park. Pick your viewing place early – there’s a handy parade route map available on the Festival Coquitlam website for you to check out. Of course, the most fun of a parade is following on behind the last float so make sure you have your walking shoes on.

Teddy Bear Picnic

When: Sunday, June 8th, 2014 from 11:00am to 4:00pm
Where: Town Centre Park (map)
Tickets: $3 admission charge (children under three and bears, free)

Prepare to picnic in the park in style. Bears welcome. All sorts of family-friendly entertainment awaits once you follow the parade into the park – storytellers, face-painters, rovers, puppet shows and I’m sure there will be a balloon twister or two. Local organizations such as the fire service usually have entertaining information booths and activities for kids to enjoy while they learn. My son’s first visit to the picnic saw him explore the fire safety house All By His Three-year-old Self in the company of some burly local firefighters. He then proceeded to lecture me on home safety and made an escape plan for us all, including the cat.

Festival Coquitlam does an excellent job in organizing such an amazing and popular start to the summer for the community, and Town Centre Park is a beautiful setting for the picnic. Take note however, there is very little shade around so if it’s hot pay attention to sunscreen, long-sleeve cover-ups, a hat and bring a bottle of water. Keep an eye on your smallest guests to keep them comfortable. Parking is also restricted and the parade route will be closed to traffic so plan accordingly.

PS: And speaking of Slippery Fish, the fun doesn’t stop here! Festival Coquitlam also holds an annual fishing day on Lafarge Lake to coincide with BC’s Free Fishing Weekend. Learn how to hook the fishy folks stocked in the lake for the day without having to apply for the usual licence. It’s a family-friendly day with fun and prizes. Volunteers will be on hand to teach you how to fish and cast a line. This year’s angler wannabes’ day is Saturday, June 14th, 2014 starting at 9:00am and running until 1:00pm … when you can go home for fish and chips!
