Spring into a Creative Retreat in Port Moody

Joyelle Brandt

Spring can be a busy time for all of us. The days are longer, and it sometimes feels as if the work piles up in direct correlation with the increased sunlight. If you could use a little bit of R&R, we know of the perfect event in Port Moody. Enjoy a mini getaway without getting away. Local artist Joyelle Brandt has teamed up with Kushala Yoga and the Port Moody Arts Centre to create a day-long soul restoration workshop.

The emphasis of this workshop is on the creative process rather than on technique or expertise. Whether you are an experienced artist and yogi or a complete beginner, this retreat is for you. The focus is on relaxation and meditation, and taking time out to re-connect with yourself.

The day will start with a gentle yoga session guided by an experienced yoga instructor from Kushala Yoga. From there participants will experience a guided meditation, and then play through several exercises designed to unleash their creativity. Each participant will create a personalized symbolic imagery collection, from which they will start on two large scale paintings on paper. These paintings will be artistic meditations, exploring their inner landscapes.

This day is an opportunity to let go of the to-do list and return to a place of child-like play. Lighten up, and allow yourself the gift of unwinding.

The workshop will be held at the Port Moody Arts Centre on Saturday, May 31, 2014 from 10am to 3pm. It’s just one of the more than 300 art programs, music lessons, free gallery exhibitions, and special events held at the centre each year. From creative retreats to festivals to summer camps, the Port Moody Arts Centre inspires creativity and supports the community’s interest in arts and culture. More details and online registration for the retreat and other events are available at www.pomoarts.ca, or you can call the Arts Centre at 604.931.2008.
