If you don’t know the song, you should go watch the cartoon ‘Bob the Builder’ now. Right now! Or else you won’t quite know what I’m talking about for the next few hundred words. Those of you familiar with Bob and his group of friends, I apologize. Yet the kids love this fun and educational cartoon. Sure there are many great life lessons to be taught, but most importantly, it introduces kids to the world of fixing things. Now, where am I going with this? Well, recently I’ve discovered that Home Depot offers a wonderful workshop for kids between the ages of 4 and 12 once a month. Kids get to experience carpentry and even get to build something.

Here in the Tri-Cities, we have a Home Depot in Coquitlam and another in Port Coquitlam. It’s quite an accessible place to take your kid. This is a great opportunity for children to develop new interests and discover new talents. The workshops teach children do-it-yourself skills and tool safety, which are always important skills to have. This workshop can be quite useful, especially if this is a typical rainy and rather uneventful Saturday. It’s also a great place to see whether your kid is interested in these sorts of activities, and if they are you can always support their interests by registering them into a Mini Carpenters class in the Port Moody Recreational Centre.

Home Depot runs these workshops every second Saturday of the month (April 12, 2014 is the next workshop date), and they are free. All supplies are provided, but parental supervision is required. Details can be found on the Home Depot website. In April, the workshop focuses on building a birdbath, which is inspired by the popular ‘Rio 2’ movie that will be released on April 11, 2014 in the local theatres. Make sure to pre-register for this activity, as it can fill up quickly and it will only run while supplies last.

Each kid gets an apron, a pin and the supplies required to build their craft. Once they are done, the crafts can be taken home where you can show them off, the next time you have a family dinner party. Dads, if you are reading this, here is an early reminder: Mother’s Day is coming up so you could give the mom two presents here, a Saturday morning off to sleep in and a nice little present that a your kid made. (Remember: moms love hand made stuff, I speak from the many years of gifting my mom with many arts and crafts – she never complained).

Just to recap, this event takes place:

Every second Saturday of the month
From 10:00am-12:00pm
For kids between the ages of 4 and 12
It is FREE
