Get your Kids Involved with Arts at Michaels

Saturday and Sunday can be two of the most fun days or two of the most dreaded days for parents. It all depends on how well you plan ahead. And the weather. Really, it’s mostly the weather. If you have procrastinated on signing your kids up for fun and exciting activities every day for the rest of their life, and now they are running around making noise and telling you how bored they are… Don’t despair! Michaels Arts and Crafts Store has great and exciting activities for little ones. It is drop in, and it’s reasonably priced. I know what you’re thinking… Whats the catch? There is none!

DSC06944I took my six year old brother to test one of these workshops out and he seemed to enjoy it. A boy that is usually into cars sat still and made a craft, and he even wanted to do it again! This definitely gives Michaels activities an A in my books.

Now, I’m sure you’re wondering, when are these magical activities taking place?

On every Saturday of the month at the Michaels in Port Coquitlam, there are half hour workshops from 10:00am-12:00pm (this is the one I tested with an actual kid). It came to $2.10(with tax). There were maybe four other kids, but plenty of space! And all of the materials were included. Best of all, each week, it is a different activity. There are picture frames, name tags, bookmarks, puzzles, and it always varies. Rumour has it, that in April, they will follow the Easter theme.

Child making craftAnother event that takes place is the two hour long Rainbow Loom classes. They are drop in, cost about $5.00 and you can leave your kids and go do your own shopping or even stay in your car and take a much needed nap. These classes are also on Saturdays, running from 12:00pm-2:00pm. Kids get to interact with their peers and learn how to create wonderful Rainbow Loom creations from each other.

If you’re still wondering what Rainbow Loom is, it is a new and creative use for plastic, colourful hair elastics. Those of you who have girls (or maybe who were girls) will definitely remember those things. They are painful monsters, the bane of our existence, the pollutant of the lands…they always get stuck in the hair of an unfortunate child, whose parents often can’t untangle the mess and use the scissors to update their kids’ look. Well, some genius has come up with a new use for them! Creating crafts. Bracelets, necklaces, rings, anything. Sounds like a girly craft? Well, boys are into it too. It is a popular skill to have if you’re a six to twelve year old or if you spend many hours hanging out with that age category.

Michaels even has summer camps available, and more information on that will be available in the coming months. Because who doesn’t love to decorate fridges, walls, and pretty much any other surface of your house and yourself with nifty crafts made by your own little angel?
