Coquitlam Residents Get on the Cart

Coquitlam Garbage Collection Changes 2014

If you live in Coquitlam – as I do – you might have noticed those super-cool garbage carts all over Port Coquitlam and Port Moody, and wondered when your city would finally get on board. The day has finally come, and the answer is that automated waste collection will be coming to Coquitlam on July 1, 2014. In preparation, you need to decide what kind of cart your family needs.

Coquitlam residents in single-family homes are asked review the selection of carts for the new solid waste system. Under the new, automated system, all single-family homes in Coquitlam will receive one 240L garbage cart and one 240L Green Can cart. The Green Can cart will come equipped with bear-resistant hardware.

The allocation of 240L carts as the standard size is based on the City’s evaluation of similar waste collection programs in Port Moody and Port Coquitlam other Metro Vancouver municipalities and assessment of Coquitlam’s residential garbage volumes. The recommended cart size (240L) is the equivalent of two standard 120L garbage cans, which is the size most Coquitlam residents currently use for curbside collection. For residents who feel that the recommended 240L carts will meet their needs, no further action is required, and the two standard carts will be delivered to your home between mid-May and the end of June.

Residents wishing to upsize or downsize their carts may do so. Additional annual utility tax fees will apply for upsizing to a 360L garbage cart. The City is encouraging everyone to try their new 240L carts for a few months, to see how the new system works. Cart exchanges will be offered at no cost until December 31, 2014. Utility fees for larger garbage carts will still apply.

Different cart sizes can be ordered before April 25th by visiting, calling 604.927.3500 or returning the cart selection card provided in the information package delivered in the April 4, 2014 edition of the Tri-City News. Single-family homes who did not receive the information package (or who already recycled theirs) can find full details on the new carts and the new solid waste system, including a list of Frequently Asked Questions, at

To assist residents in evaluating their cart size requirements, the carts will also be on display until July 1, 2014 at the following locations:
