The kids are out of school right now, enjoying Spring Break. Spring itself officially kicks off today. Little green leaves are appearing on trees, and the first flowers are blossoming. New growth is all around. If you’re feeling inspired to start something new yourself, you might want to check out the spring session, starting at Place des Arts the first week of April. There are music, dance and art classes for all ages, as well as a number of one-to-three day workshops. If you want to try something new without the commitment of a longer class, workshops can be a great option.

New spring art classes for adults include Acrylics on Wood with Joy Kirkwood, Drawing with Sue Cowan, Painting 102 with Stan Hunc and Handbuilding Pottery “Anything but Round” with Clive Tucker. Some of the spring workshops on offer are:

Family Time – Handmade Paper
Wednesdays, May 28 and June 4, 2014, 3:45-4:45pm
Kids six and under and a parent or guardian can experience the traditional craft of handmade paper. Children will gain hands-on experience creating unique pieces. We will explore various methods of making paper and its many uses.

Crackle Weave – Traditional and Modern
Saturdays, May 10 and 17, 2014, 9:00am-4:00pm
Crackle is a weave structure traditionally used for upholstery; but Crackle can be used for so much more, including towels, tablecloths and clothing. Advanced beginners will learn how to play with this fascinating weave.

Pottery – Cone 6 Crystalline Porcelain
Fridays, May 16, 23 and 30, 2014, 6:00-9:00pm
Adults are invited to learn the intricacies of Crystalline Porcelains. The instructors will guide you through the steps of making, glazing and post-fire finishing. This three-class workshop will demystify the growing of crystals in glaze. Some basic wheel-throwing skills are required.

Printmaking – Monoprint or the Painterly Print
Thursdays, May 22 and 29, 2014, 6:15-8:45pm
Adults are invited to discover graphic arts and the monoprint, also called the “painterly print”. Working both with and without a press, you will explore and experiment with the printing process and embrace unexpected results from creating several one-of-a-kind prints.

Introduction to Digital Photography
Saturday, May 24 and Sunday, May 25, 2014, 1:00-4:00pm
Adults are invited to learn the basics of digital photography such as shutter speeds, depth of field, the various functions and settings and how they relate directly to your desired photo. By the end of this course, you will be comfortable shooting in manual mode. Digital SLR with manual control required.

Basketry – Appalachian Egg Basket
Saturday, May 31, 2014, 10:00am-5:00pm
Adults can create a unique, sturdy, twin-bottom, ribbed basked with a handle using commercial cane as well as natural materials from the garden. Traditionally used to carry eggs, this basket looks great in the home and is very serviceable. Dyeing, collecting and how to incorporate natural materials will be discussed. Supplies included. Suitable for all levels.
