Out to Dinner at Onyx Steakhouse

On a rare kid-free evening recently, my husband and I finally managed to do what we’d been meaning to do for years: we went out to dinner at Onyx Steakhouse in Port Moody’s Suter Brook development. We arrived a little before 6:00pm on a Friday evening and the place was quiet. We were seated right away, and our server dropped by a few minutes later to offer us beverages and point out the evening’s specials.

Billing itself as a steakhouse with a ‘casual contemporary feel’, you would be just as home in jeans or business attire at the Port Moody eatery. The menu features a wide range of appies, salads, mains and a la carte items. Meals range in price from $13.45 for the quinoa salad to $41.95 for a top sirloin and lobster tail. While there are vegetarian options, Onyx definitely focuses on the meat, which isn’t surprising for a steakhouse. There’s also an extensive beverage list featuring cocktails, beer and wine, plus more.

I was very hungry, so I ordered a starter caesar salad and the top sirloin dinner. My husband, who’d eaten a big lunch at work that day, opted for the steak sandwich. When our drinks were served, we received warm rolls with garlic butter, which were delicious. The food arrived in a reasonable time – it wasn’t blazing fast, but it wasn’t slow, either. The service was very friendly, and it all felt well-paced. The caesar salad was quite good. We were off to an auspicious start.

When our mains arrived I stole my husband’s ‘legendary’ onion ring, and I have to say that while there was only one, it was quite large and quite good. I also enjoyed the seasonal vegetables and potatoes. The steak was only okay – it was cooked a little bit unevenly, and it wasn’t as tender or flavourful as I would have hoped for. My husband enjoyed his steak sandwich a lot, however. He was lukewarm on the accompanying fries, as he likes a really crispy fry. I like a fluffy fry, so I thought they were very well prepared.

Very full, we took a pass on dessert, so I can’t report what the dessert menu was like. All in all, we enjoyed our experience, and we will likely return, although next time I will order something other than the steak.
