Yoga Fundraiser in Port Moody

Kushala Yoga Port Moody

Living on the West Coast, yoga has become something of an institution. Even when people aren’t doing it, judging by the number of yoga pants you see at the mall, many are prepared to execute their best downward dog at any time.

This past September I was looking for a new fitness regimen for both body and mind after an ankle injury had made treadmill running too painful. I ended up taking the introductory Yoga 101 class from Kushala Yoga in Port Moody. After some encouraging words, Chris our instructor eased us into it gently. By the end of the course I was a convert, and have been going to Kushala a couple days a week since. Now I actually own Lululemon shorts and can tell you the difference between Warriors 1, 2, and 3. I’m not yet drinking wheatgrass juice, annoying you with tales of my next silent retreat and working “namaste” into daily conversation, but I’ve got room to improve.

The reasons for taking up yoga are many, but one outcome many are looking for is improved mental health. And if yoga can improve your mental health, why not do some yoga to help others.

On Saturday, February 1st, 2014, Kushala Yoga is hosting Posturing for Peace. A fundraiser for mental health. Funds raised will be donated to the Canadian Mental Health Association – Simon Fraser Branch, and will support the community in two ways. Half will go towards transitional housing. The Simon Fraser Branch staffs four transition houses and one two-bedroom apartment, which support clients as they become independent again in the community. The other half goes towards funding creative and active lifestyle activities for those living with mental illness.

Mental health problems continue to have a stigma around them, but the numbers illustrate the silent epidemic. There are over 72,000 people living with mental health challenges in the Simon Fraser Region. It is the leading cause of all hospitalization in our community.

The event is a fun afternoon of all-levels yoga guided by the Kushala Yoga instructors. Live music, tea, snacks, and a health & wellness Q&A round out the festivities.
