Teens Can Study With the Pros for Spring Break

Last week we filled you in on a number of great Tri-Cities spring break day camps to keep your kids busy while school’s out in March. However, it looks like we missed some great offerings for teens at Place des Arts in Coquitlam. If you have kids in grades nine through twelve who would like to really kick things up a notch this spring, you’ll want to check out the arts centre’s Study with the Pros workshops for 2014. Today we’re giving you just a taste of what’s in store.

Acting & Auditioning for Film & Television

Monday, March 24 – Tuesday, March 25, 2014, 9:00am-1:00pm
In this two-day intensive, actor and teacher Tim Perez will take you through the process of auditioning for film and television. Tim has a Master of Fine Arts from NYU. He began his career working off Broadway at the New York Shakespeare Festival, appearing in nine main stage productions with such artists as F. Murray Abraham, Morgan Freeman, John Leguizamo and Helen Hunt. He has over 40 television and film credits, including guest starring roles on Alcatraz, ER, NYPD Blue, Jag and Smallville. In the workshop you’ll learn the technique of acting in front of a camera and develop a natural and comfortable way of working for the camera. Topics covered will include playing different intentions and emotions in front of the camera, learning what objectives and super objectives are when you’re breaking down a script, and defining moment-to-moment in acting.

Audition Master Class for Musical Theatre

Wednesday, March 26 – Thursday, March 27, 2014, 9:00am-1:00pm
Come prepared with one or two songs, and musical theatre performer and audition coach Colleen Winton will use her extensive professional experience to bring out your best. Colleen’s career includes the Stratford, Shaw and Charlottetown Festivals, the original Canadian companies of CATS and Show Boat, and extensive film/TV credits. She has received Jessie and Ovation awards. At the workshop you will fine tune your audition song in a supportive and professional atmosphere. Each participant will receive individual attention and learn techniques and strategies that will help build confidence and add polish to audition material. You’ll be accompanied by Ovation award-winning music director, composer and vocal coach Sarah Jaysmith. Sarah is an experienced and sympathetic accompanist who specializes in auditions and master classes.

The Business of Show biz Panel Talk with the Pros

Friday, March 28, 2014, 11:00am-1:00pm
A panel of industry professionals will share the ins and outs of the business of show business. Casting directors for stage, film and television will explain what they look for in an audition, and a talent agent will explain how, when and what you need to do to sign on with an agency. You’ll also learn tips of the trade from professional actors to prepare you for a career in the performing arts. The talk will conclude with an opportunity to ask questions of the panel. Everyone is welcome at this workshop – students, teachers, parents, friends! The panel includes talent agent Emilio Salituro, Muse Artistic Management, casting directors Coreen Myers (film and TV) and Stephanie Hargreaves, Artist Liaison for the Arts Club Theatre Company, and professional actors Alison Kelly of Mom’s The Word and Dylan Playfair of Some Assembly Required.
