Mossom Creek Hatchery: How you can help

This past Wednesday as you may know, a devastating fire destroyed the Mossom Creek salmon hatchery in Port Moody. The hatchery has been an instrumental part of the community since 1976. Mossom Creek was salmon free until the hatchery rehabilitated the creek, where Chum and Coho salmon now come home every fall. The only silver lining is this year’s salmon fry were not destroyed in the fire, but the building was completely burned to the ground.

Tomorrow night, the City of Port Moody is holding a special council meeting to vote on a resolution to give $10,000 from their contingency fund to get the ball rolling.

Here’s how you can help. You can deposit donations directly into the Mossom Creek hatchery’s account…

  • Any TD Canada Trust Branch
  • Account Number: 539-5000965

Businesses can be issued receipts, and note there will be no door-to-door donation soliciting.

All the albums and scrapbooks were destroyed in the fire, so the Port Moody Ecological Society is helping out. If you have any old photos or newspaper clippings, forward digital images to elaineawillis (at) gmail.com, or mail to…

Also, a fundraiser will be held in the New Year, and we’ll bring that info to you when it becomes available. Here are some photos of what was left, courtesy Sandra Niven.
