Get a Head Start on Your Resolutions at Place des Arts

With Christmas closing in on us, New Year’s can’t be far behind. When this month draws to a close, many of us will be thinking about the year ahead, and how we can make the most of it. Perhaps we’ll resolve to start exercising, stop eating sugar, be kinder, or quit smoking. Or maybe this is the year to try something new, take a class, and expand your horizons.

If the idea of exploring your creative side in 2014 appeals to you, you can get a head start by signing up for a class at Place des Arts in Coquitlam. Of course, they have lots of offerings for kids. But why should the little ones have all the fun? Starting in January, there are a number of new adult art classes on offer at the arts centre in Maillardville. Here’s a sampling.

A Painting a Day

Students 18 years old and up will work from simple still-life arrangements to complete a small painting each class. At the end of the course, participants will have a collection of small paintings and will have developed drawing skills, painting techniques and confidence to create work in their own choice of oil or acrylic. This class is suitable for all levels.
Details: Thursdays, January 16 – March 6, 2014, 9:15am – 1:00pm, $222 + tax

Acrylics on Paper

Students 17 years old and up will learn foundational drawing skills and how to use acrylics as water media. Oriental brush techniques and the use of stenciling and other printmaking techniques for illustrative effects are just a few of the possibilities participants will explore in this highly experimental painting class. All works will be created on watercolour paper, and supplies are included.

Expand your understanding and expertise of essential elements of visual composition and drawing in challenging, classic and contemporary types of drawing projects.
