Rocking the Port Moody Rock & Gem Club Show

Port Moody Rock and Gem Show 2013

Do you love rocks? If so, we have the event for you.

Port Moody rockhounds hunt the hills and valleys for the weird and the wonderful, magically bring out stone’s hidden beauty, and generally, have fun with rocks. Once a year they lift their eyes from our hammers and grindstones to present theirr finds and treasures to the public. This year, the Port Moody Rock & Gem Club is celebrating its 35th year with a retrospective of their history in the area. The show runs Saturday, October 26 and Sunday, October 27, 2013 at the Kyle Centre, right behind the Arts Centre in downtown Port Moody.

As you are no doubt aware, Port Moody is celebrating its 100th birthday this year. The 2013 show has been sanctioned as an official Centennial event with special displays featuring the geological and archaeological histories of the area, a hand-carved stone sculpture celebrating Port Moody, “Prospecting Port Moodite”, and the “Centennial Cut” – a BC gemstone featuring 100 facets, one for each year of Port Moody’s incorporation as a City. Artist Cosimo Geracitano and the magnificent “Jade Book” will also visit on the Saturday. Sunday includes a visit from Col. Moody and dedications to honourary members.

Other activities include demonstrations, spin and win, Rocksmash, and chances to win hourly door prizes. New this year is Gemstone Panning for the kids and a rock expert to help you identify a mystery find. Check out dealers from around the province selling one-of-a-kind specimens and working material, holistic crystals, jewellery and craft items. Entry is by donation and the show runs from 10:00am to 5:00pm each day.

The Port Moody Rock and Gem Club has been a presence in the community for over 35 years, holding an annual show for many of those years. An active and growing group, the club is a member of the Port Moody Arts Centre Society, BC Lapidary Society, and ArtsConnect. For more information visit www.portmoodyrockclub.com.
