Tour de PoCo

Tour de Poco

It’s not a race and there’s certainly not a yellow jersey for the course leader, but the 3rd Annual (Centennial Edition) Tour de PoCo is coming up on Sunday, June 9, 2013. The non-profit Port Coquitlam Heritage and Cultural Society, colloquially known as PoCo Heritage, is presenting this free cycling event to celebrate Port Coquitlam’s centennial year.

Starting at 11:00am in Lions Park this ‘freewheeling, informative and fun’ cycling event will follow portions of the Traboulay Trail and visit some parks as you learn about some historical and cultural sites around PoCo. Some PoCo Heritage volunteers will be at stops along the way to provide information around the history of the site you are visiting and the surrounding area as well as its significance to the development of Port Coquitlam. The ride is leisurely and relatively flat but approximately 26KM in length with some small hills and expected to take about 4 hours, so a reasonable level of fitness is required. The rain or shine event is open to everyone 12 and older (unless riding tandem or in a trailer) and is free of charge.

From Lions Park, the group will head north along the Coquitlam River, following the Taboulay Trail to DeBouville Slough. From there the riders will follow the Minnekhada Loop and stop in at the historic Minnekhada Lodge as their first point of interest. After visiting the lodge, the group will continue along the Minnekhada Loop and head back to the slough, this time to follow the south side trail toward the Pitt River. Another point of interest is visited along this portion of trail before reaching the banks and dyke system of the Pitt. Following the Pitt River, then cutting across Dominion Avenue, the group will be looping past scenic blueberry fields and learning historical facts along the way. The Tour de PoCo ends back at Lions Park about 3:00pm.

Participants are asked to bring along a light lunch, water, high-visibility clothing and helmets. Other recommended items include a camera, patch kit and sunscreen (hopefully!). This event is 100% free and totally run by volunteers from PoCo Heritage though donations are always appreciated. Corporate sponsors of the Tour de PoCo include Cap’s Westwood Cycle, Norco Performance Bikes, PoCo Parks and Rec and Candian Heritage as well as the PoCo Centennial Spirit Committee.
