Port Moody Centennial Parade and All Nations Festival

Port Moody Centennial Parade

If you like to plan out your local fun ahead of time, you’ll want to pencil in Saturday, June 22, 2013 on your calendar. That’s the date when Port Moody will celebrate its 100th birthday with the Port Moody Centennial Parade and All Nations Festival.

The fun starts at 11:00am when the parade begins at Port Moody’s Civic Centre, and follows Murray Street to Rocky Point Park. The parade is going to be a festival of centennial-themed entertainment for the entire community. To stay in the loop, stop by portmoody.ca/parade. Or follow the City of Port Moody on Facebook and Twitter, where they’re counting down 100 fun facts about the parade. For instance, thanks to fact number 37 we now know they will be passing out Canada flags for spectators to get into the Centennial spirit.

From 1:30-9:00pm on June 22, 2013, the fun kicks up a notch at Rocky Point Park with the All Nations Festival. Admission is free, although you’re encouraged to made a donation to the SD43 Aboriginal Youth Programs. Featuring more than eight hours of fun and 100 aboriginal artists, this is an event you won’t want to miss. It starts off with the taditional canoe arrival at Rocky Point launch at 1:30pm. Other highlights include an artisan market, salmon BBQ, traditional storytelling, traditional indigenous dancers, poets, the digital teepee, a hiphop and DJ battle, and media arts. Kids will enjoy traditional crafting and an evening campfire.

While the City of Port Moody may be turning 100 years old, we all know that First Nations people have been calling this place home for far longer than that. This is a great chance to celebrate Port Moody’s centennial and First Nations culture at the same time. Plus, you just may learn something.

Happy 100th, Port Moody!
