Gallagher’s Coffee Bar and Café

It’s not summer in Port Moody until I’ve had my first vanilla Oreo freeze at Gallagher’s Coffee Bar and Café. And this usually happens right after Newport Village’s corner coffee shop opens its patio up for the season. Patrons sit in the shade, catching up on the daily newspaper as village life goes by.

Gallagher’s has been a firm favourite with me and my Wee Guy since we moved to Port Moody over seven years ago. It’s seen us through post-jungle-gym refueling stops and those midday moments of toddlerhood, right up to being a favourite post-library stop after school. The kid’s hot chocolate and a colourful giant cookie remain firm favourites, as do the peanut butter toffee squares and super-charged mochas for mom (chocolate whip? yes please!). A visit here is a treat for us both.

But it’s not just for the stay-at-home parent crowd with the little ones in tow; Gallagher’s is a licensed café, serving Granville Island Brewery’s best and Sommersby cider to quench your thirst. Lunchtimes are a treat too with a fresh selection of delicious savouries including a daily soup special, as well as salads, wraps and paninis. My favourite, for something more substantial, is the baked lasagne served with a house salad. The dressing is divine.

Have I mentioned the baked goods yet? Gluten-free options are available, or the fully-loaded breakfast wraps? Do try the chicken tarragon – delicious! And the blended ice drinks are simply the best in the neighbourhood – creamy, blended and the right amount of slush for cooling off. Summer in Port Moody isn’t summer without one.

The café offers comfy chairs for lounging, as well as a sit-up bar or tables for leisure, networking appointments and exciting ‘dining with child’ moments. The café isn’t huge but clever décor and layout mean it doesn’t feel cramped. Staff are friendly and helpful, serving freshly prepared paninis and lunch items to your table.

The café is a great place for meeting people – friends, business contacts, potential clients or dates. I’m sure each will be impressed that you know such a wonderful establishment so close to home. Evenings are also worth checking out. A local knitting group has recently taken up residence every 2nd and 4th Monday evening; other events include Thursday evening open mic nights (musicians – sign up from 7.30pm onwards).

Gallagher’s also serves as a desk away from home for the numerous small businesses in the area. Power outlets aren’t as plentiful or accessible as some other venues so make sure your laptop is fully charged. WiFi availability means that on a sunny day you can indeed take your mobile device outside, treat yourself to lunch and remain connected to co-workers and clients.

… which is what I’m doing right now.
Hmmm – another vanilla Oreo freeze perhaps?
