You’ll Find Fun for the Whole Family at Place des Arts

Place Des Arts Family Day April 2013

You know what they say about April showers and May flowers, right? While that may give us something to look forward to next month, if all the rain is getting you down right now, we have some suggestions to keep your whole family occupied indoors at Place des Arts in Coquitlam. The fun never stops there, rain or shine.

Day of the Arts

If you have children in public school, you are likely very familiar with Pro-D Days. They really do have a way of popping up all over the place. Even though we’ve just finished Spring Break here in the Tri-Cities, we’ve got another Pro-D Day coming up on April 19, 2013. If you’re wondering what to do with your children, never fear – Place des Arts has the answer. Their Day of the Arts will keep your kids in kindergarten to grade five active and engaged with an Under the Sea theme.

The Day of the Arts runs from 8:45am-3:45pm, and after care is available until 5:00pm for an additional fee. The class offerings include fun, themed offerings like Dance Beneath the Waves, Underwater Actors, Giant Pacific Yarn Octopus and Let’s go Jellyfishing. If your little ones would like to get in on the fun you can register online, by phone at 604.664.1636, or in person at Place des Arts.

Family Day at PdA

If the thought of taking your children to an art gallery makes your blood run cold, you’ll want to check out Family Day at Place des Arts. This event is designed to actively engage families in learning about art in a fun, interactive and informal environment. It’s all about letting go of any feelings of intimidation you have, and getting engaged by art. Each family day offers a guided tour of the current exhibitions, plus three drop-in style workshops geared for all ages. You and your children will create artworks based on what you have learned during their visit, and no prior experience is required.

The next Family Day is happening Sunday, April 28, 2013 from 1:30-3:30pm. You’ll check out the exhibits Seeds, created by Place des Arts ceramics instructor Vin Arora, and Lost and Found by Shari Pratt. The workshops include a chance to try wheel-thrown pottery with Vin Arora, mixed media painting with Shari Pratt and hand-hooked rugs with Gone Hooking. As well, you’re invited to bring your special “thread” to weave into Place des Arts’ 40th Anniversary tapestry as part of their Social Fabric Project. Admission is by donation, and you can reserve your spot by calling 604.664.1636.

Spring Session

If you’d like to take up pottery, try your hand at weaving, brush up on your painting, or make some music, you’ll want to know that Place des Arts’ spring session starts this week. There’s still time to find a class that tickles your fancy. Head to www.placedesarts.ca to find out more.

This is just a sampling of what’s happening at Place des Arts this month. There’s also a faculty concert coming up on April 13, and their Salon Speaker Series on April 18. Plus, until April 10 enter a contest for your book club to win tickets to the Salon Speaker Series. Once again, head to www.placedesarts.ca to find out more.

Happy art-making!
