Take a step back into time this weekend with an appearance by April Wine, music from the Rat Pack and some laughs from a couple of 1950’s housewives.  Or jump forward to the present and take in a ballet, attend Port Moody’s annual ArtWalk or if you are a bride or groom-to-be, there is a Wedding Show happening in the Tri-Cities.  Enjoy your weekend!

What:  Crossroads Coffeehouse – Echo Band
When:  Friday, April 12 from 7:30-10:00pm

The skinny:  For over twelve years local musicians from across the Lower Mainland have joined us to help raise funds and awareness for the Crossroads Inlet Centre Hospice.  The “Unplugged at the Crossroads Hospice Coffeehouse” series is set in a casual atmosphere centered on acoustical performances from a wide range of musical genres. Feature Performer:  Echo Band – ECHO is a local original song writing music project created by Rob Spuls and Randall Burgess. Drawing from a lifetime of professional musical experience, ECHO creates and delivers an ever growing menu of diverse original music designed to move and inspire their listening audience. $5 admission at the door. Doors open at 7:00 pm, open stage 7:30 pm and feature performer 9:00pm.

What:  Inlet Theatre Movie: Live and Become
When:  Friday, April 12 from 7:30-9:30pm

The skinny:  The basic plot follows the life of a young Ethiopian boy, Shlomo, whose mother realizes that he can be saved if he poses as one of the Falashas, the Ethiopian Jews. They were clandestinely airlifted to Israel from Sudan in the mid 1980s. This is a story of migration, assimilation and identity through the eyes of an individual. It shows how Israel deals with these ‘different’ Jews and how he deals with not really being one of them.  This is not a comedy, but it contains plenty of warmth and humor. Rating NR 140 minutes Language: Hebrew, French, Amharic, (English subtitles). Tickets are only available at City Hall Galleria after 6:45 pm on film nights. No presales. Show time is at 7:30pm. What:  14th Annual ArtWalk
When:  Saturday and Sunday, April 13 & 14 from 12:00-5:00pm
Where:  Old Towne Centre, Clark Street (map)
The skinny:  ArtWalk is a two day Art & Music Festival for the Whole Family! Designed to be walked or biked this self guided art tour features 22 venues & businesses hosting over 60 artists and performers in Port Moody’s Old Town Centre (Clarke St). New to the festival this year, look out for art in the trees, our all day out door Music Main Stage and Drumming Circle as well as a host of art and music activities for kids.Whether out for a walk, or a bite to eat, there is so much to see and do! And don’t forget to keep an eye out for that special piece of art for yourself or someone on your gift list. Each day we have new activities and performances in the main square so plan to enjoy the festivities both days!

What:  Faculty Concert: The Pack is Back!

The skinny:  Get transported back to the days where Frank, Sammy and Dean were the kings of entertainment and Las Vegas was their playground. This tribute to the days of the Rat Pack is PACK-ed full of laughs, exciting choreography and all the hits from the golden age of music. This is the final concert of the season and features faculty member, Shawna Parry. The Leonore Peyton Salon will be set up cabaret style and the bar will be open at 6:30 pm and throughout the concert. Bar menu will include, wine ($4) and martinis ($6). What:  Myles Goodwyn & April Wine

The skinny:  It all began in Nova Scotia back in late 1969 … the Henman brothers, David and Ritchie together with their cousin, Jim Henman and fellow musician, Myles Goodwyn all got together and formed a band called April Wine … a name chosen simply because they were two words that they thought sounded good together. The band was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame at the Juno Awards in 2010. The group continues their hectic pace touring throughout both Canada and the United States still satisfying fans with a live mix of straight ahead rock & roll and power ballads – an April Wine mainstay. What:  3rd Annual Up the Creek Run
When:  Sunday, April 14 from 8:30-11:30am
Where:  Hyde Creek Recreation Centre, 1379 Laurier Avenue (map)
The skinny:  Presented by Trio Sport Events, this run takes place one week before the Vancouver Sun Run. You can sleep in and drive right up to the event with plenty of parking. No lineups for the washroom and no waiting in the cold. Line up at the actual start line and get on the course in seconds with plenty of room to run. The gymnasium will provide shelter before the race and host the post-run awards and activities. Register by phone 604-927-7946 or in person at any Port Coquitlam Parks & Rec facility. What:  The First Annual Tri-City Wedding Show

What:  Passages – Ballet Kelowna

The skinny:  No passport required as Ballet Kelowna wraps up its first decade of artistic excellence with a performance that takes audiences on a journey through Spain, Russia, England and home to Canada. The evening’s program begins in Spain with the pas de trois from Paquita by Marius Petitpa, music by Russian composer Leon Minkus, that tells the story of a beautiful gypsy girl who falls in love with a French nobleman and the clash of social classes; then to England with Journey Out of Darkness by David LaHay with music by English composer Benjamin Britten as well as a second whimsical work by LaHay with music by Bretten entitled Five for Frank. The journey ends in Canada with a reprisal of Double Variations, the co-choreographed work by two of Vancouver’s most dynamic talents, Simone Orlando and Joe Laughlin.
