Art and Fabulous Food at Gallery Bistro

The Gallery Bistro on Clarke Street in downtown Port Moody is a local lunchtime staple, with a devoted clientele. When it recently changed ownership, some degree of apprehension was to be expected. However, given that the new owners are Rainer and Helen Daniels, fears have quickly been put to rest. As long-standing and valued members of the local arts community, Bistro regulars can rest assured that the cafe is in good hands.

I recently had the chance to sit down with Rainer and Helen to talk about their plans for the Gallery Bistro. The pair is immensely glad that the staff have stayed on, ensuring that the great soups, sandwiches and coffee that keep people coming back won’t be changing. What is changing, though, is the gallery half of Gallery Bistro. Previously, it was shuttered, and the entrance from the restaurant was walled over. Now, it’s open once again, and local artists have their work on display. After a mad rush to get it up and running for ArtsConnect’s ArtWalk earlier this month, the first exhibition will remain in place for the foreseeable future.

When I stopped in I had the salmon chowder – one of the soups that day – along with a side order of the red potato salad. Both were excellent. There was a steady stream of customers coming through for lunch, many of them greeted by name. I found a smallish seating area in front, and more tables and chairs in the back, down a hallway covered with art. Many of the works hanging in the restaurant were actually created by Rainer and Helen themselves. The bistro is surprisingly spacious, so even though it was busy there was still ample seating.

Gallery Bistro – both restaurant and art gallery – is open from 10:00am to 3:00pm, six days a week (they’re closed Mondays). In addition to the lunch fare, you’ll find some great brunch offerings. It’s still something of a work in progress, but the Daniels have taken it a long way in a short time, once again combining art and food in a way that makes this place truly unique, and well-suited to a community that calls itself “The City of the Arts”.
