Taste Of Poco Spirit 2013

Walking the runway this week:  Scouts, fundraisers, homeless pets, a wine expert, singers, inspirational locals and oh yes, we can’t forget the real runway event that’s happening this week with wearable art that will be strutting down the runway at Port Moody’s Wearable Art Awards 2013. From the beautiful to the unusual, it’s an evening full of creative, eclectic designs that are sure to “wow” you.  And don’t forget it’s Valentine’s Day tomorrow.  Maybe tickets to one of the events happening this week would be a nice alternative to those overpriced flowers you always buy. Yes?

What:  Heart of Hawthorne Foundation Gala

The skinny:  Join the Heart of Hawthorne Foundation for their first annual Valentine’s Day Gala to help support the Port Coquitlam Seniors’ Housing Society and the Hawthorne Seniors Care Community. What:  Day of Singing with Coastal Sound

The skinny:  Coastal Sound Music Academy presents Day of Singing Final Concert at Evergreen’s Studio Theatre. What:  A Taste of PoCo Spirit 2013 – Centennial Edition

What:  Wearable Art Awards 2013
When:  Saturday and Sunday, February 16 from 7:30-9:30pm and February 17 from 6:30-8:30pm

The skinny:  Presented by the Port Moody Arts Centre Society, the Wearable Art Awards is a competition that has been encouraging local, Canadian and international artists of all mediums to submit evocative, imaginative, and thought provoking creations for the human body since 2002. Accepted works are juried in a two-step process by a panel of jurors drawn from the fashion and textile industry. To begin, each piece is examined for its creativity, originality, skill in construction and conceptual idea.The final jurying takes place at the performance presentation during which the works are modeled to a live audience and their “wow” factor and presence on the red carpet is evaluated. The performance is followed up by a three-week long exhibition at the end of which a “People’s Choice” award is presented based on votes from the public. In total $5,000 is distributed between winners of 10 category and special awards. $25 Adults, $10 Youth (14 yrs and under)

The skinny:  Over 90 children’s voices join popular children’s entertainer and JUNO-winner Norman Foote on Stage as part of Evergreen’s popular Family Series! What makes Foote so great is his ability to find subject matter that challenges and engages his audience – both young and old. He puts his theatrical and comedic talents to use as he weaves fabulous stories and paints musical imagery that audiences easily connect with and respond to. Joining Foote on stage will be children’s choirs from Coastal Sound Music Academy, Blakeburn Elementary and Aspenwood Elementary Schools. What:  Blissful Parenting Workshop

The skinny:  A free workshop by Chuck Anderson on the challenges of parenting.
