I find pretty much everything about Original’s Coffee surprising. The new cafe opened at Clarke and Elgin in Port Moody right before Christmas. As a big Mexican food fan, when my friend invited me to meet her there for lunch, I didn’t have to think twice. I was in. But I was curious – what would I find when I arrived?
The first surprise, for me, was the cafe’s location. I managed to get completely turned around, before I finally spotted the converted house on the corner with the Original’s banner out front. Even though I’ve lived in the area for a decade, and know the neighbourhood well, it’s all-too-easy for me to overlook what’s happening on the street around me.
Their menu is simple and straightforward, offering a few Mexican food options and a variety of hot and cold beverages. It’s comfort food with a Latin American flair, and the prices are very affordable. I ordered two tacos at $2.50 a pop, and found the amounts were ample for a lighter lunch. Plus, they were completely delicious. I was blown away that some meat in a tortilla could be that good. My lunch companion opted for the tortilla soup, which she declared very good. Together we split the guacamole, which offered a second surprise, with a hint of orange. It was really delightful, and I enjoyed it a lot.
I decided to sample the Mexican hot chocolate as I’m not a coffee drinker, and I enjoyed the addition of cinnamon and a few other spices. When they delivered our drinks, I was surprised again to see that their mugs and saucers have their names on the pottery. I commented on it, and business partners Esteban and Flora told me that the pottery was made for them in Mexico. The art on the walls, the glass decorations, and the food is sourced from their home city. In fact, they chose Original’s for the name because for them the cafe is about celebrating their personal origins.
In addition to coffee, tea and hot chocolate, you’ll find some uniquely Mexican beverages like licuados, which are a twist on smoothies. You can take your beverage to stay or go. If you stay, they offer free wifi and have ample charging stations for your laptop. Their back room can be used as a meeting space, and they’re working on their beautiful back garden with an eye towards summer. The building that houses the cafe is truly unique, combining the flavour of a Port Moody heritage neighbourhood with brightly-coloured Mexican art.
If you’d like to try something a little different, or if you’re looking for a new spot to escape to get some work done on a sunny afternoon, Original’s is worth a try.
