Can you feel the magic in the air?  Peter Pan is flying by, a magical closet is popping up at Evergreen, a dazzling, lit train will be pulling into Port Moody, and a jolly, red man who can make wishes come true will be making appearances throughout the Tri-Cities.  Ebenezer Scrooge will also be making an appearance and Guess Who else will be stopping by?  Burton Cummings!  Christmas is coming early for some of you.  As for the rest of us, 13 more sleeps until stockings are filled!

The skinny:  Theatrix Youtheatre Society presents an original musical adaptation based on the classic children’s story from James M Barrie. Created by the cast, this original production features the story of a lost boy who flies Wendy to the mythical Never land for a grand adventure with mermaids, lost kids and pirates, only to find that she believes in the power of fairy dust from Tinker Bell. What:  Annual Holiday Wine & Cheese Salon

The skinny:  Get ready for the holidays enjoying an evening tasting incredible seasonal holiday wines, including some value selections! Guests will sample 16 wines from around the world all matched with gourmet cheeses, artisan spreads, and rustic breads during this unique holiday tasting. This is not a typical structured workshop, it is a stand up salon style self-guided tasting. The room will feature four stations including one for sparkling wine, white wine, red wine, and dessert wine. Local Wine Expert, John Gerum, will be on-site with his event team pouring the wines and talking about the unique food matches.  Tickets are $32 each (includes HST)

The skinny:  Philosophers’ Café is a series of informal public discussions in libraries, cafés, and restaurants throughout Metro Vancouver. The cafés, which are open to everyone, have brought dialogue and discussion to thousands of people who are interested in exploring issues from the absurd to the sublime. Registration and experience are not required and admission is free.
On Thursday in Coquitlam:  “Rising healthcare cost and our aging society” There will be enormous consequences for Canada when our largest demographic starts to age. What will some of the consequences be and how should we deal with it?
On Friday in PoCo:  “Science and religion: An unholy alliance?” Many people believe that science and religion occupy two separate worlds and that never the twain shall meet—yet they both claim to be the truth. How do we honour the claims of both science and religion? Can and should they both play a part in modern life? Has science cancelled religion?

What:  Inlet Theatre Movie: Wilbur Wants to Kill Himself

The skinny:  Port Moody Film Society presents “Wilbur Wants to Kill Himself”. The good-hearted Harbour has spent his whole life trying to take care of his motherless, suicidal little brother Wilbur. When they are in their thirties their father dies and the brothers inherit his second-hand bookshop. One day Alice enters the shop with her little daughter. Alice is a cleaning lady at the nearby hospital and she sells the books that the patients leave behind. Harbour falls in love with Alice and soon all four of them are closely intertwined in each other’s lives – and perhaps even deaths. What:  The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe

What:  2012 CP Holiday Train
When:  Tuesday, December 18 from 8:00 to 10:00pm
Where:  300 Ioco Road (behind the Port Moody arena and Recreation Centre) (map)
The skinny:  Sip hot chocolate, snack on chili, or decorate cookies by donation with all proceeds benefiting the Port Moody SHARE Food Bank. Pre-train entertainment includes singing Christmas duo Tom & Emily, and the Metro Vancouver Firefighters Band under the Remax tent. Santa will be on hand to spread Christmas cheer, kids can get their faces painted and meet the SHARE Bear too! The CP Holiday Train arrives at approximately 9:05pm followed by performances on the train stage by Doc Walker, Miss Emily and Brothers Dube. The Recreation Complex and City Hall/Library parking lots will be very busy, so we strongly encourage everyone to take transit or walk down to the event. Cost: Free (but all food & monetary donations raised at the event go to the SHARE Food Bank).
