It’s time once again for everyone’s favourite feature. Well, maybe just my favourite feature as I get to eat nachos. This time Official Nacho Taster­® Mike and I headed to the John B Pub in Coquitlam.

It was a rainy Friday night and a BC Lions gameday, so the place was packed to the gills. The first thing you notice about the John B is the very slick decor. It had been a while since I had been there, and the environment had been seriously upgraded. New HD televisions everywhere, wide comfortable seating, and a very cool table with an indoor fireplace in the middle. The “signature back bar” looked like there were plenty of different ways to get your drink on. Really well done. So we found the only open table and awaited the arrival of the holy grail of pub food, the nachos.

The first thing we noticed was the nachos were a little overdone. While the chips were fairly decent, the cheese wasn’t horribly plentiful. This resulted in cheese that was a little hard on the chip and pooling below, not that careful balance of gooeyness that is the hallmark of any top nacho plate. The veggies were a bit of a hodge podge, with very large pieces of jalapeño. If jalapeño is your thing, these might be the nachos for you. The salsa was quite runny with the guacamole and sour cream kinda lumped together in the side dish.

Now it could have been that the place was so busy that they were working as fast as they could, and the room did seem understaffed for the crowd that was there. So the bottom line, gorgeous room to watch a game in, but the nachos for this edition of the nacho tour were nothing to write home about. I would like to try them again on a little calmer night.

  1. Quite the job, going around taste-testing nachos! I have to say, I’m envious! In any case, my experience is that pubs and bars tend to offer better Mexican appie fare, especially nachos, than your everyday restaurants. In any case, I’m more than willing to try my hand at any place that’s offering!

  3. I just wanted to say that I apologize for your food experience that evening. We are known for having great food, and it hurts me when I hear someone had a bad experience as I can tell the nachos do not look like the nachos we put out. I hold no excuses but can only ask that you give us another chance to make it right. As a side note, we do make a most of our food items in house, and the salsa is one of them. It’s based on runny style salsas found in Mexican restaurants in the city, rather than a chunky thick salsa ie Pace. Come find me as your nachos are on me.

    • Thanks for writing back Owen. It looks like it was one of those nights, and I have had good food with you before. We’ll have to do Nacho Tour Round 2 down the road. Love what you’ve done with the decor by the way.

  4. I remember going to this place back in 1986. The pub was back of a Pizza Hut, across the street from where it is now. I wonder if Brian is still managing. LOL!
