Port Moody Library Links to Literacy Golf Tournament 2012

So many events happening at the end of August, where do I begin?  If you like operas, skating, charity golf tourneys, art exhibits or outdoor movies (there are three this weekend!) then you will be a happy-camper.  If you are tired of summer and want to start planning for fall activities there’s a Fall Program Sampler happening at Leigh Square Community Arts Village.  And don’t forget those summer-long events that are coming to an end this weekend:  Village Vibe Concert Series, Music in the Park, Summer Sunday Concert and Chinese Legacies, Family Fun Days.  For your last chance to take in these events, go to our Events Calendar for more details.  Say good-bye to summer with a bang!

What:  Summer Beach BBQ & Skate

What:  Opera on the Lake
When:  Friday & Saturday, August 24 – 25 at 8:00pm

The skinny:  DragonDiva Operatic Theatre & Evergreen co-present The Old Maid and the Thief by Gian Carlo Menotti.  This charming opera by Gian Carlo Menotti premiered in 1939 on NBC Radio. DragonDiva will bring the story back to its roots and present the opera in the style of a radio play with a live studio audience. There’s more… in true DragonDiva style the company will also take on the commercial breaks, backstage shenanigans and who makes all those sound effects? It’s drama behind the drama! Tickets are $25.

The skinny:  For an unforgettable Friday night experience, start your weekend off with an outdoor movie night this summer! Our 26ft tall enormous silver screen will be traveling around the city parks so pack a picnic, bring a blanket and round up some friends or bring the whole family out to Cinema Under the Stars! The skinny:  Fall is just around the corner and it’s time to start thinking about a new season of learning, laughing, and growing. Bring your family and friends to learn more about community programs in your neighbourhood this fall! This free open house presented by Leigh Square, Terry Fox Library, Wilson Centre and Friends of Leigh Square Society will feature information about arts, recreation and cultural programs for children, adults and seniors along with information on community programs from Terry Fox Library and new projects by the Friends of Leigh Square Society. Instructors and staff will be in attendance to answer your questions, address any concerns and offer mini demos on what the class will offer before you register in these exciting new classes. What:  Art Exhibition Opening: Coming Up for Air, Rocks, Trees and H2O

The skinny:  Take in the Opening Reception of this new art exhibition and meet the artists who will be in attendance, providing informal artist talks by seasoned Pender Harbour artists Wendy Simmonds, Pat Jobb, June Malaka, and Frances Sevier. “Coming Up for Air, Rocks, Trees and H2O” interprets and celebrates the four elements of nature, reflecting the artists’ love for the environment in which they live. Each, working within her selected media (acrylic and watercolor painting, fine art printmaking, stained glass, mixed media), has created works based on this theme.  Free Admission.

What:  Booster Juice presents: Suter Brook Movie Nights

What:  Coquitlam’s Inspiration Garden Presents: A Family-Friendly Environmental Documentary
When:  Saturday, August 25 at 8:30pm
Where:  Inspiration Garden, Guildford Way and Pipeline Road [map]
The skinny:  Free outdoor screening of “Queen of the Sun-what are the bees telling us?” (www.queenofthesun.com). It is a documentary about honeybees and about the impact CCD (Colony Collapse Disorder) has made on them around the globe and also how important bees are to our crops and really, to our existence. Show starts @ dusk (approx 8:30pm). Short intro talk before the movie about bees and what gardeners can do to support them. Popcorn and treats will be available and bring your own chairs/blankets.

What:  12th Annual Links to Literacy Golf Tournament

The skinny:  Take part in this annual fundraiser for the Port Moody Library. Enjoy a day of golf and fun knowing that you are helping to build a legacy of literacy for your community.
