What’s Up in the Tri-Cities: SHIFT 1-Act Festival, BC Highland Games + More!

Place Des Arts Year End Concert 2012

This last week in June we’ve got several great events for everyone to enjoy, first up being the 5th Annual Juvenile Diabetes Golf Classic then following is the SHIFT 1-Act Festival, the popular BC Highland Games and many other events to enjoy.

What: 5th Annual Juvenile Diabetes Golf Classic
When: Thursday, June 21 from 8:00am – 4;00pm
Where: Meadow Gardens Golf Course [map]
The skinny: The most fun you’ll have at a golf course this year! Going into its 5th year, the Annual Juvenile Diabetes Golf Classic draws business leaders and community professionals from throughout the Lower Mainland and has sold out 3 of 4 years. With the goal of helping finding a cure, all proceeds go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).

What: Port Coquitlam Farmers Market
When: Thursday, June 21 from 3:00 – 7:00pm
Where: Leigh Square Community Arts Village [map]
The skinny: Summer Fresh Cooking for Seniors. This is a lively afternoon farmers’ market bringing freshly picked vegetables and fruit from nearby farms into the downtown. Delicious sweets and savouries are available from many prepared food vendors. Linger awhile and enjoy the music of local young and not-so-young musicians while you have a light supper from Didi’s Greek Pita (try the chicken souvlaki!) and the best coffee ever from Vango Espresso.

What: Mixer at the Quay

The skinny: Come out for an evening of networking with your Tri-Cities Chamber, the New Westminster Chamber of Commerce, and the Burnaby Board of Trade! Join us at this beautiful venue for some delicious food, great drinks, mini massages, live entertainment by the Vancouver Circus School and door prizes. What: The SHIFT 1-Act Festival
When: Thursday, June 21 – 23 from 8:00 – 10:00pm

The skinny: The SHIFT 1-Act Festival returns for its fifth anniversary, presenting a selection of short plays (under 1 hour) from June 14th and 15th at The Cultch’s Vancity Culture Lab in Vancouver and June 21st to 23rd at the Inlet Theatre in Port Moody. The festival features a fantastic line-up of emerging artists presenting a variety of original and published short works

What: BC Highland Games
When: Saturday, June 23 from 9:00am – 7:00pm
Where: Percy Perry Stadium [map]
The skinny: A traditional Highland Games with competitions in Piping, Drumming, Pipe Bands, and Scottish Heavy Events (i.e.: Tossing the Caber), as well as demonstrations of Scottish Country Dancing, Scottish entertainers, and a vendors’ area.

What: Klahanie’s Community Garage Sale
When: Saturday, June 23 from 9:00am – 1:00pm
Where: Canoe Club and Townhomes [map]
The skinny: Last year we had over 40 residents attend, and we hope to make this year bigger and better. We have more tables, signs for townhomes, and will be doing a massive charity drive, benefitting the Share food bank, the Canadian Diabetes Association, the Port Moody Ecological Society, and the Charlene Reavely Children’s Charity.

What: Marine Watercolours

The skinny: Kiff Holland is returning to his roots with Marine Watercolours, scheduled for June 23 & 24th at the Arts Centre. During this weekend master class, artists will polish their watercolour skills under the guidance of one of the West Coast’s finest artists and instructors. Working from reference materials, participants will be guided through the process of creating the effects and power of light playing on sea, sky and shoreline.

What: The Government Inspector: Next Stage Production

The skinny: The program’s premier production is an adaptation of Nikolai Gogol’s The Inspector General, a great classic work of 19th Century Russian drama. Place des Arts’ freewheeling adaptation by Next Stage director and teacher James O’Shea, is called The Government Inspector — and it’s a comedy of inspired silliness.

What: Pajo’s 25th Anniversary Celebration

The skinny: It was 25 years ago when Pat and Joan (hence the name PAJO’s) decided to open their second Pajo’s location at the beautiful Rocky Point Park in Port Moody where the sea, the sand and the sky meet. How fitting for an award winning fish and chips shop!

The skinny: Yarilo Music is pleased to announce the establishment of a scholarship fund within the society to be awarded to young musicians in advanced music studies. To raise funds for the scholarship, Yarilo is holding a Students Helping Students concert, featuring several young musicians who play at an advanced level. All proceeds from the concert will go towards the Yarilo scholarship program.
