This week brings us lots of festivals and fun events to kick off the first official week of summer: the annual BC Highland Games, a Theatre Festival, a Rose Festival and lots more for you and your whole family. Enjoy!

What: Austin Heights BIA Daisy Day Festival

The skinny: Daisy Day is Austin Height’s first community celebration. The morning starts off with a free pancake breakfast rustled up by the Optimist Club. Tony Prophet, a seasoned entertainer who always gets any crowd involved in the fun is first up on the stage and the emcee for the day. The skinny: If you like pipe bands, drumming, dancing and Celtic music then the Highland Games are for you. The main stage has all day entertainment showcasing Celtic bands, singing and dancing. You can taste Scotch Whisky, see heavy events including Caber tossing and watch world championship piping, drumming and dancing.

What: Rose Festival & Show 2011

The skinny: The Fraser Pacific Rose Society Presents ‘Roses over the Rainbow.’ See hundreds of roses in vases, bowls, baskets, photographs, and floral arrangements. Leading Floral Designers will be on display as well as the exhibits of rose growers from all over BC. Help to judge ‘The Most Fragrant Rose’, ‘People’s Choice for both Floral Design and Commercial Exhibitor’. Floral theme crafters will be on site and we will have rose bushes and cut roses for sale.

The skinny: Public Dreams and Metro Vancouver are inviting families to their free eco-art event, A Midsummer Fête. It’s an afternoon for families to get out of the city, spend time with each other and celebrate Nature and all her gifts.

What: Public Tree Tour – Linden Walk 1
When: Sunday, June 26 from 1:00-2:00pm
Where: Riverview Hospital [map]
The skinny: Walks are usually led by a volunteer arborist, and last about two hours, depending on weather and walkers’ preference. Dress for the weather, and wear comfy shoes or boots. We go rain or shine. Children and adults welcome. Dogs on ‘leash’ are also welcome. Walks are free but you can join the society, or make a tax-deductible donation if you wish.
