What: Scotch Tasting Workshop

The skinny: Join our local scotch expert for an informative and interesting session exploring single malt scotches. You will learn about the different scotch regions, and how that influences the final taste and aromas of the different scotches. Our expert will guide you through the tasting experience, so you can appreciate the subtle differences between each sample. A total of four different scotches will be tasted and discussed in this fascinating look at single malts.

What: Personal Family Preparedness Course
When: Thursday, February 17 from 7:00-9:00pm
Where: No. 1 Fire Hall, Port Coquitlam [map]
The skinny: Personal preparedness is a key component of the City’s Emergency Preparedness program. Citizens could be without water, electricity, heat, information, ambulance services, and more. This course will train you to help yourself, your family, your co-workers and your neighbours in those first 72 hours and beyond.

What: Day of the Arts

The skinny: This Friday’s a Pro-D Day, and while the teachers do a little bit of learning of their own, your kids can stay busy themselves with Place des Arts’ Day of the Arts. The theme this year is “Stormy Weather”. Students in grades K-5 can choose from a number of blocks full of fantastic art, movement and music activities around that theme. Small class sizes ensure that students receive quality instruction. Class options include Clay Play: Crazy Tornadoes, Stormy Comics, Windy Day Kites, Singing in the Rain and a whole lot more.

What: NFB Friday Matinees

The skinny: Join us on Friday afternoons at the Poirier branch for screenings of documentaries from the National Film Board. This session features Tagged and Children of Soldiers. Tagged introduces us to the raging debate over the ubiquitous Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip, touted as a tool with invaluable medical applications by its supporters and denounced as the death knell for civil liberties by privacy advocates. Children of Soldiers is an incisive portrait of the daily lives of children and teens from four military families, and reveals the particular circumstances of life at Canadian Forces Base Petawawa.

What: MMA: Seeing Red II

The skinny: This event promises to be memorable with three West Coast MMA Titles and one Muay Thai Title up for grabs. The main event will feature Murray “Showtime” Sogan facing “Sinister” Andrew Small for the West Coast MMA Title. The Co-main will see Emillio Ditrocchio face Rob “Wolverine” Woodcock for the Featherweight Strap. The Bantamweight Tile fight will have James “Haitian Devastation” Pratt vie with Oliver Vajda. Muay Thai fans will be treated to three bouts featuring the West Coast middleweight Muay Thai title bout between Joe Halfar and Isak Van Borgondien.

What: Spirit Swims

What: Maillardville Heritage Walk

The skinny: Did you know that Maillardville is the largest francophone community west of the Rockies? Discover the history of Maillardville! Take a guided walking tour and hear the stories behind the historic houses. The guided tour will be bilingual in French and English. Tea and coffee will be served in the Parlour following the 30-40 minute walk. Registration is required.

What: A Taste of PoCo Spirit

The skinny: PoCo Heritage, renowned wine expert John Gerum and Earls Kitchen and Bar have teamed up to present “A Taste of PoCo Spirit III”. The Gathering Place will set the stage, providing the perfect blend of art, wine and cuisine. The exhibit titled ‘Roots: In the International Year of the Forest’ will be featured. Take your wine encounter to the next level with an introduction to the Fine Wines of Italy. Learn tips on how to properly appreciate the wines and pick new and interesting food pairings.

What: Wearable Art Awards

The skinny: The Wearable Art Awards competition has been encouraging local, Canadian and international artists of all mediums to submit evocative, imaginative, and thought provoking creations for the human body since 2002. The final judging takes place at the performance presentation during which the works are modeled to a live audience and their “wow” factor and presence on the red carpet is evaluated.

What: The Shirleys and Coastal Sound Youth Choir

The skinny: The Shirleys are an all-female a cappella septet that packs a real punch! They will delight you with their humour, passion and enthusiasm. The Shirleys have been carefully selecting songs from around the globe that reflect humanity’s common hopes and aspirations for a better, more joyful world. Joining them, Coastal Sound Youth Choir has been making headlines, recently sharing stage with The Nylons, musica intima, and Nikki Yanofsky. Known for their spine-tingling and exuberant performances, the 65 voice choir sings with true body and soul.

What: The Real View Forum

The skinny: Forum for women who want to make their financial dreams a reality. Five professional women plus Kristin Woolard (who works for Dominion Lending) will take part in a public forum interested in purchasing or selling real estate. Audience participation/discussion anticipated.

The skinny: Are you wondering how to borrow eBooks from Library to Go, our digital eBook and audiobook collection? Attend a hands-on session, where we will demonstrate how tod ownload and authorize Adobe Digital Editions, search for and borrow an eBook from Library to Go, transfer the book to an eReader and return an eBook. After the demonstration you will have a chance to try it yourself. If you wish, bring your own eReader and fully charged laptop . Please note: library eBooks are not compatible with Kindles.
