Port Moody Wearable Art Awards

Port Moody, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam

Once again, the Wearable Art Awards are returning to Port Moody. Presented Port Moody Arts Centre Society, the Wearable Art Awards competition has been encouraging local, Canadian and international artists of all mediums to submit evocative, imaginative, and thought provoking creations for the human body since 2002. The final judging takes place at the performance presentation during which the works are modeled to a live audience and their “wow” factor and presence on the red carpet is evaluated.

This year the performances will be happening at the Port Moody City Hall Galleria [map] on Saturday, February 19 at 7:30pm and Sunday, February 20 at 6:30pm.

The performance is followed up by a five-week long exhibition at the Port Moody Arts Centre [map]. This year, the exhibition runs from March 3 – April 10. At the end of the exhibition a “People’s Choice” award is presented based on votes from the public. In total $5,000 is distributed between winners in three categories (Headdress, Brassiere and Open) and seven special awards (Second Life, Best in Show, Student, Material of the Year (Paper), Technology, Ethnic Expression and People’s Choice).

The Wearable Art Awards attracts entries from across Canada, the United States, and around the world. In 2009, 73 entries created by 59 artists were accepted for the performance and following exhibition.

This is a fabulous event, and you won’t want to miss it! To find out more, or to purchase tickets for one of the performances, call the Port Moody Arts Centre at 604.931.2008.
