Port Coquitlam, Coquitlam, Port Moody

Does the idea of serving on the board of a non-profit society appeal to you? It’s a great way to give back to your community, meet other local people who share your interests, and learn what it takes to help an organization run. If this sounds like your thing, you may want to consider serving on the board of the Friends of Leigh Square Society. The Leigh Square Community Arts Village is currently seeking nominations.

The Friends of Leigh Square Society is a community organization with non-profit charitable status that works in partnership with the City of Port Coquitlam. It is dedicated to facilitating the growth of artistic and cultural opportunities for the community and connecting the arts with all people and businesses. Creating visual and cultural experiences gives us all a chance to reflect on contemporary issues emerging from these changing dynamics, and to explore our area’s culture and identity. The Society plays a role in realizing these goals by actively supporting and shaping the programs, events and services at Leigh Square and other city wide initiatives.

Board members work, live or play in Port Coquitlam, and have professional skills to offer such as marketing/communications, bookkeeping, writing, education, exhibitions and event planning and an interest in the arts, culture and heritage. This is a group of dynamic and fun individuals from all walks of life wanting to make a difference in their community. You do not have to be an artist but you’ll learn a lot about art and cultural practices by being involved. You’ll also be helping to foster a dynamic local arts community. The Board currently consists of eight members and can go up to twelve. New board members will serve for a two-year term that begins April 1, 2011 and ends March 31, 2013.

Self-nominations, consenting nominations and suggestions are all welcome. Nominations are due March 11, 2011, and nomination forms are available for download on the website at www.portcoquitlam.ca/arts. For more information contact Yvonne Chui at chuiy@portcoquitlam.ca or call 604.927.8440.
