City of Port Moody and Tri-Cities Chamber Awards

Port Moody, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam

It’s awards show season, and while the Grammys and the Oscars are worldwide spectacles, it’s not likely that you’ll personally be affected by any of the people you see on those shows. There are some awards shows that just wrapped up here in the Tri-Cities, and while the amount of Botox on stage may be a little lower, these people are making our community a better place to be.

Back in January, The City of Port Moody held their annual Civic Appreciation Dinner. They recognized four exceptional residents and one outstanding non-profit in four categories: the arts, accessibility, heritage and the environment.

Dan Mattinson of Coastal Sound Music Academy won the Arts Award. In 2008, the Coastal Sound Children’s Choir toured China, and Dan has been putting Port Moody choral on the map for 21 years and counting.

The Home Team, Beaudoin Residence won the Peter Hulbert Accessibility Award. The Home Team, a non-profit community outreach of the Cornerstone Seventh Day Adventist Church, provides home repairs for families in need in the Tri-Cities area. Over 10 days in September and October 2010, the Home Team coordinated volunteers and businesses to transform Chantal Beaudoin’s home after she lost a leg in 2004.

Glyn Williams-Jones and Isabelle Lepine won the Heritage Award for the revitalization of their heritage home at 2710 Henry Street.

John Dunn took home the Environment Award. His dedication at the Noons Creek Hatchery since 1991 is unparalleled. He has spent an estimated 15,000 hours serving his community.

On January 29th, the Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce held their annual Business Excellence Awards. The winners were…

Non-Profit of the Year: Place Des Arts
Small Business of the Year: Me-N-Ed’s Pizza
Business Leader(s) of the Year: Layne Magnuson (Metro Motors) & Doug Morneau (Rhino Marketing)
Business of the Year: Thrifty Foods – Austin Station

And remember, if you’re going to watch the Oscars on February 27th, do it for a good cause with the Three Divas at Coquitlam City Hall.
