Purely Cabaret comes to the Tri-Cities

SHIFT Performing Arts Society is thrilled to bring award-winning and critically acclaimed chanteuse Lindsay Sutherland Boal, performing in her one-woman cabaret concert Purely Cabaret on November 25 and 27 at the Evergreen Cultural Centre in Coquitlam.

Lindsay has performed as a guest artist in Canada, China and the United Kingdom and with the Nova Scotia Symphony Orchestra, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Manitoba Opera and in the ensemble with the Vancouver Opera. This past summer, after a successful performance of Weimar cabaret songs in Weimar, Germany, Sutherland Boal wrote, directed, produced and starred in her own one-woman German cabaret show Purely Cabaret – a collection of songs from the Weimar Republic (1919 – 1933) which ran seventeen performances in Vancouver, Ottawa and Toronto. Purely Cabaret earned her national coverage and also a Critics Choice Award and Honourable Mention at the Ottawa International Fringe Festival. She was also selected to attend the prestigious International Cabaret Conference at Yale University where she received international press on National Public Radio.

Purely Cabaret is one of the most unique musical presentations I’ve seen,” explains Nick Sartore, SHIFT’s artistic managing director. “Lindsay brings an incredible background in classical singing to repertoire that isn’t often heard in this context. We are very excited to bring this award-winning show to the Tri-Cities.” SHIFT has worked with Lindsay for 3 years. The company tried to present the show in 2009, but after losing provincial gaming funding, the society had to cancel the presentation. “We’re especially thrilled to be able to find the resources to bring the show to Coquitlam. It’s a presentation I truly believe in; our audience is going to fall in love with Lindsay and her incredible talent and charm.”

In addition to her traditional Weimar repertoire, Lindsay will also incorporate elements from her childhood growing up in the Tri-Cities. She attended Port Moody Junior and Senior Secondary schools, graduating in 1994 after singing the title role in Hello, Dolly! during her senior year. “When SHIFT asked me to bring my cabaret show to Coquitlam I was thrilled. Purely Cabaret was on tour and going well, however the show has a very specific theme: German Repertoire from the Weimar Republic,” said Lindsay. “While I find the music thrilling, the average audience member does not – most of the songs are in German! So, upon further thought, I reconsidered doing my full German repertoire and instead wanted to add some songs to talk about my experiences growing up in Coquitlam and Port Moody.”

Purely Cabaret runs on Thursday, November 25 and Saturday, November 27 at 8pm at the Evergreen Cultural Centre in Coquitlam [map]. And we have a pair of tickets to give away!
