PechaKucha Night Coming to Coquitlam

Have you heard of PechaKucha? If not, you should. It’s a fabulous evening where local movers and shakers share their creativity, inspiration and ideas. Part performance, part networking, part work presentation, it’s something that has to be seen.

PechaKucha Night was devised in Tokyo in February 2003 as an event for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public.

It has turned into a massive celebration, with events happening in hundreds of cities, inspiring creatives worldwide. Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of “chit chat”, it rests on a presentation format that is based on a simple idea: 20 images x 20 seconds. It’s a format that makes presentations concise, and keeps things moving at a rapid pace.

The presentation format was devised by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham of Klein Dytham architecture. They invented it because architects talk too much. Give a microphone and some images to an architect – or most creative people for that matter – and they’ll go on forever! And so PechaKucha was the answer. The first PechaKucha Night was held in Tokyo in their gallery, lounge, bar, club, creative kitchen SuperDeluxe. Klein Dytham architecture still organize and support the global PechaKucha Night network and organise PechaKucha Night Tokyo.

PechaKucha is now happening in 360 cities, including Coquitlam. The first local PechaKucha Night – Volume #1 – is happening on Monday, November 15 in Evergreen Cultural Centre’s Rehearsal Studio. Doors open at 6:30pm, and the presentation starts at 7:30pm. It’s presented by ArtsConnect, and it promises to be a great evening.

This is the Tri-Cities’ first PechaKucha Night, but it won’t be its last. There will be at least 4 PechaKucha Nights every year. So stop by, and take it in, and consider throwing your own hat into the ring for a future PechaKecha Night.

Tickets are a bargain at $12 each, and you can buy them online at EventBrite. Or, if that doesn’t work, give ArtsConnect a call at 603.931.8255. And enjoy some local arts and culture!
